Clutch swap done (v. pix and profanity)

Mother****er this was not an easy job, but it was done - pix to come in a bit.

We got the intake, starter, battery... the whole thing out and then it was time for the tranny. Out the tranny came easy - 107 pounds of fury using a stand jack and the lift.

Clutch all assembled, life was good; the 4th gen clutch has 6 double springs, 5th gen has only 4. The old clutch was toast - totally toast; it went down to the rivets...

So, it was time for the tranny to get in. Can two people do it? Naw... three people do it? Nope - took 4 of us (!!!) to lift this mother****er up, align it, push it in and then me running with an impact gun bolting the lower bolts and two upper bolts as fast as I can so they can let it go.

And then of course we found the breather hose for the tranny got stuck in the tranny so there it goes down again (although just released the bolts) and yank it out and off to install everything else.

Unfortunately for me - I didn't get to install the short shifter cuz by the time we were done with that **** Napa auto parts closed and I found out the bolts on the cat were rusted to hell and could snap if we tried to take them off - not a biggie, it will be done next week.

The new clutch is butter smooth... light, responsive - freaking awesome. I also cleaned the throttle body which added to throttle response. I do have a bit of vibrations at about 750 RPM that go away once it hits 900-1000 and never comes back, I assume that's clutch chatter.... will it go away once the clutch is broken in? And how long should I drive the car "easy" (or how long is break in period)?

Pix:

Underbody. Crossmember scratches due to being lowered, and a nice leak on the rear main seal... nice.

Doctor Herb pretending to take the intake out.

This is perhaps the COOLEST shop light EVER!!!! Super bright and lasts for ages.

Intake and battery out - HI2U MISTAR STARTER AND TRANNY!

Old clutch still on.

A rather bad shot but you can still make the rivets out on the right disk - the old one and the left disk - the new one.

Clutch comparison - GUESS THE NEW ONE!

Old PP.

The shots of the S13 surprised me there at the end.. Good job on the clutch, dunno if I would have used an impact gun > Tq wrench but hey w/e works.

I only bolted them fast but not all the way; they were torqued with a torque wrench afterwards.

S13 with S15 front?

Congrats on the install. It's a big task. My clutch chatters below 1000rpm too, but I have a clutchnet performance clutch.

Not much leverage so each person had one hand up - it was hard...

And this is a shop, not a garage - of course it'd be filthy

Do you weigh 107 lbs. or is that the tranny? I did not think it was that heavy. Hit the gym , usually we have one person bench press it into place and then the other guide it on and start putting a few bolts in.

Good job one getting it done

First off - here are the specific clutch related parts you should get. I def. suggest Courtesy Nissan or Performance Nissan (that's mynismo.com).

Check out the stock numbers and for a price comparison here are two website to compare...

    http://www.mynismo.com/

    http://www.courtesyparts.com/nissan-parts_05.html

On top of that - you want to get the following:

Transmission oil - Amsoil 75W90 FTW; talk to Talkinghorse about it.
Stainless steel clutch line from the junction box to the slave cylinder - will save you lots of headache.
Rear main seal - because those leak and they are cheap, will spare you the headache when it goes bad.

You may or may not want to get a new flywheel; mine was obliterated so I got a new one; yours may just need to be resurfaced.

it was hard cuz there wasn't enough space to put all hands on it and it didn't want to slide in

Congrats. I just have 1 question. Why did you want to take of the cat to change the shifter?

4 people!? Ya someone wasnt helping. One person should be able to lift that thing from underneath, or you can use a jack.

Why did you get a new flywheel? And why are you telling other people they may need to buy a new flywheel? Just resurface it, there is nothing wrong with the one you have pictured above. I wore my clutch down even further than yours before and still resurfaced my flywheel. Ive used the same flywheel through 4 clutch jobs.

All in all looks like you did pretty well. S13 looks pretty nice, although that bumper is ugly as sin.

99se5speed: you need to remove the cat to access the shifter forn underneath. The shifter sits right above the cat.

ok i tried to price it all out and couldn't get all the prices from either link so does any one know how much this comes out to total and how hard is it to pull the tranny and when you do pull tranny it can be dropped with out removing the engine right? any info on pricing or anything else would be greatly appreciated. Also does any one know how much a shop would charge to do this

So are you saying you took off the heat shield that sits above the cat and just stuck your hands up there and did it with the cat still on?

Congrats! Awesome job. I'm considering doing mine, but haven't gotten the nerve to do it. Also need to drive it most days, so it will take a lot of planning to get it done quickly.

    Again, great job!

Pretty much. I had someone helping me of course, one nut around that metal bracket around the shifter wouldn't come of so the only trouble i had was welding that bish off.

    RMS was replaced.

I got the flywheel for $40 - new OEM from a hookup - so yeah I still have my old one if anyone wants it

I was pretty sure that you'd need to drop the cat in order to swap the shifter...

good job with the clutch. its easier with many hands but you can lay under the tranny and pull it off and catch it yourself, its heavy but if you got some muscle you can do it. . . had to lift that bastard on and off 6 motha effin times.

    break in the clutch good.

Yeah this clutch is a mother... grips like mad and I feel like I have to re-learn this car all over again... still a bit of a clutch chatter between 700-900 RPM... also when breaking the clutch in - I can drive as fast as I want just granny shift, right?

Yeah, i forgot to mention...the 5th gen clutch needs to be babied pretty good. Don't abuse it at all. I waited about 500-600 miles before i stompted on it. Some ppl just abuse it right after the install and it slips or if you don't wait enough time it slips. Many stories like this on NYCmaximas.org

I stomped on it maybe... 3-4 times but only one time was me going "oooh goody", other times I actually had to do it to avoid traffic. I drive light on it... :|

Your not supposed to go over 60mph with the new clutch for around 500miles. I'm just warning you, so many ppl have the 5th gen clutch and it slips for them, mine grabs the PP like crazy!!! 5th gen clutch FTMFW!!!

Break in the clutch for 500 miles, keep it under 3k and no flooring it. Just to clear it up incase there is any mis interpretation. You need to break in the clutch for 500 gear changing miles. You cant put in a new clutch and take a 600 mile trip and think the clutch is broken in. It need to be 500 miles worth of gear changes. So to be safe those who look at it like 500 miles or city driving, double it and make it a thousand miles. Or to be ultimately safe, do a oil change at the time of the clutch change, and then consider your brake in period done when you are going to change your oil again.

Well I do a lot of commuting every day - 70 miles each way and lots of gear changing... I think I'll keep doing it for a thousand miles and keep it light... I hope there isn't any premature damage from my flooring it those 3-4 times... I hope...

So does mine - it's insane... I am not quite sure though why you can't go over 60. When it grabs - it doesn't matter at what speed it spins as long as it grabs - slipping it is a big no no.

I'm far from being a clutch and tranny guru. I'm just passing along info that i was told when i got my clutch. This is my first car on stick by i've been driving manual for some years.

Basically i meant what Mdeezy said about not going over 3k...it's kinda the same thing.

You can't deny the fact that our car is insane from 5th to 3rd lol.

You probably didnt. The main thing you want to avoid is hard shifts. Once the clutch is engaged its ok to get on it a little bit.
