Coilover Binding noise? Suspension related....Video

I have been having a problem with my D2 coilovers or some type of suspension related item. When I first installed them there was no noises and then after a while I developed the noise you hear in the video. I cannot figure out what it is. It is on the driver side. I have greased the pillow ball joint after the noise occurred which did not fix the problem. I am thinking the coilover spring is binding and then releasing. It only happens when I turn. I figure if it was springs binding it would also happen when you go over bumps? If anyone has any insight as to what it is it would be greatly appreciated.

Thats the spring binding, it loads up and then pops free. The bearing/pillow ball mount is supposed to move freely but not in your case. Greasing it wont help, you need new ones or to rebuild them.

Well I am still under warranty by D2 so I guess I will contact them and let them know what is up. So the reason the spring is binding is because the pillow ball mount is not moving freely?

Well I dont have a strut bearing(on struts) I have a rotating ball joint on top of my coilovers. That rotates as the wheels turn. I have had more problems with my coilovers then anyone I know. Had a blown rear strut already and now a frozen pillow ball joint that causing binding.

Damn thats what my Ground Controls used to do. I replaced them with Ksports however mine seem to make a noise similar to that when I'm traveling very slow. It sounds the same as yours but not that loud and it only makes that sound once while turning the wheel.

Well the only other option is JLC coilovers which are expensive. No one else seems to be having problems left and right with their coilovers. This noise really sounds awful when I am driving. I really like the coilovers and I want to continue to use coilovers but it just this noise that I am hating.

Cool I will try that this weekend. How exactly would I tighten it as everything would be turning at the same time?

Yea i had the same problem with the noise while i turned. I have ground control coilovers, Tokico Hp Shocks and Struts. I found out its wasn't the pillow ball mount, its the piece of gasket thats between the coilover and the pillow ball gasket.

Had Ksport. I had to keep adjusting the dampening since the dampening changes every friggin day. after almost a year, one of them leaked. I feel your pain.

My stillen camber plates have worn out bearings so they rattle, but they have never popped. They keep the stock strut bearing in there so it cant bind. Its not uncommon for the pillow ***** to wear out rather quickly.

The top hat nut WILL help, but eventually the pillow-ball will be at a point where no amount of tightening will cure the noise.

Daaaaaaamn, I just watched that video.

I had a minor issue with that and used the collars to solve it. The pillow mount will make more of a metal on metal banging sound when it's on the way out.

So what do you guys think it is? Do you think I will need a new pillow ball mount or will tightening the top nut help? I guess tightening the nut will first determine if that fixes the problem the easiest. I just want to figure out the problem before my warranty runs out.

I know it's a pain to lift the front and take the wheels off but you can try adjusting the collars/preload.

As in tighten or loosen? Right now they are just snug up against the spring.

Sounds so familiar. Have a friend turn the steering wheel for you and watch the spring moving around and you'll see the problem up there. Guess it's not preload if the collar is simply turned snug up against it though.

I read that the bushing I think is called gets chewed up sometimes and needs to be replaced. Its that rubber piece underneath the bottom of the spring when those wear out your coilovers will make noise like yours does. I replaced mine with ES bushings and my noises went away.

Well I took off my strut today as the guy at D2 said I needed to grease my pillow ball mount which I did once before. So I decided I would do it again today. So I took it off and started greasing and well the camber plate doesnt rotate easy compared to my right side. It takes quite a bit of pressure to move the camber plate. I told the guy this and he said they dont exactly have to spin when it off the car. Which I thought was weird. SHouldnt it move easy with hardly any pressure? As when you apply the weight of the car it puts alot of pressure on the joint and if it cant move easy then it will bind like it is in my case. Well just thought I would share to see if anyone got any feedback on this.
