ECU's
either JWT or technosquare, both advance timing and altered AF ratios, The JWT can raise your rev limit if you have a variable intake, best best is to keep an eye on the classifieds forums for one
Best to forget the word ECU and get e-Manage Ultimate. Said it a thousand times on this forum, buying an ECU is like buying a VCR. Yeah it will display movies, but why bother when it is outdated, doesn't work as well, and has less features.
... cause the ECU is a plug and play... boost in power etc. and the emanage has to be tuned... depending on the user... the emanage might be bit toomuch...
I would get the ECU only because of the simplicity but the emanage def will give you tons more customization.

just lookin for a little edge with not a lot of effort. i want the timing adjust and some different fuel ratios. i know i can get a lot more popwer out of max simply because of trying differnt gas types and different weather and even different altitudes. i would like to be able to tune everything but if it is cheaper just get a premade setup then im cool with that. whats the next low cost mod after y-pipe, and ecu. im thinkin about rims but i just baught new khumos so im waiting on that. i like the little 5-10 hp increasers. if i keep doing it like that i wont get tired of it.
already answered but like above jwt, and technosquare for upgraded ecu, (does TS still upgrade them?) you will need a 95/96 ecu and match your tranny.
greddy emanage ultimate with your stock 98 ecu is also another option.
i see the pros and cons too, a used upgraded ecu would be more plug and play (ha ! we say plug and play but that ecu bracket can put up a darn good fight, and has been known to beat the stew out of a few members before they won the fight in a 12 round deceison, rofl !) its also going to make you faster.
for me i have moved on to greddy eu but havent installed it or tuned it yet. since i dont have the skills to do it myself. thats something else to consider. price of EU, wiring harness, plus install and tune.
There is a write up in the all motor forums though.
some good basics though would be
- ypipe
- ecu upgrade
- lightweight wheels
- 00VI swap (which you would want to consider JWT ecu + (rpm switch) for the upgrade or Greddy EU)
right off the top of my head those upgrades listed are worth doing for performance, anything else would be minor
