Stuck E-Brake cable

I get into the car it's 22 F outside, let go of my e-brake and put her in reverse. BUT MY RIGHT BREAK WON'T LET GO THAT *ITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to take off the wheel and massage the frozen e-brake cable to make it let go! What can cause this other than the cold, I saw no breaks in the hose to let in water. But when I twist the rubber part of the cable around the inner metal it's as if there's way too much friction.

1) What can cause this?
2) Any idea how expensive of a repair is this?

3) That was a ***** trying to free the brake cable in windy 22F couldn't feel my damn fingers, and now I can't get to work in MY car because they're stuck again..

spray the e-brake assmebly with some penetrating lube. thenhave someone pull the brake up and down repeatedly to work free the rust. for future referrence, moving the car and then slamming on the brakes will usually free it up.

I tried but figured out that the solution proposed won't work to free it up. The brake hose is fine. It's the ebrake line that's messed up, somewhere far along the line.

*--------------;;---------------
[==]

[==] = the caliper
* = the spring mechanism on rear caliper
------ = the e-brake line hose
;; = where it gets stuck and doesn't let go of the cable..

if it is just the cable, it should be pretty easy to replace
http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/303

it is possible that there is corrosion where the cable connects to the caliper, there is a small arm there that moves with the cable... if it is rusted, it may stick after the e brake is released.

sounds like a fun winter project (I'll stay behind this couch where it is warm)

[edit - if I didn't take 10 minutes to submit a post, I would have seen yours above... oops]

The rear caliper is new, I took a picture of the caliper **** position (the one with the sping, attached to the e-brake cable)..released the e-brake took picture, pulled ebrake took picture, no change. My brakes worked when I pumped them after getting the car to move. Since the wheel was removed, I released the ebrake and began massaging the ebrake cable and it began to slowly release, I could feel the cable sliding roughly inside the sheat. I was then able to spin the hub. Went into car pulled ebrake, released. Went back hub wasn't moving. Massaged cable by twisting the rubber (closer to door panel) and it released again. It's as if the grease inside froze..

I replaced my right rear brake cable. It seems like that side is the first to go on most Maxima's. Must be the way it's routed under the car. It is expensive. I paid about $70 for one side. Good thing the left one didn't need it.

interesting..I've got a problem on the same ride..was it a time consuming job (unbolting the old one)?

Where did it link up with the main cable? near the exhaust?

The job is time consuming. The higher you can jack the car the better. There is a shield that covers the cat and when you remove it, you can see where the 2 cables meet the main cable. Release the tension on the main cable first before you start. Just unsnap the e-brake boot and loosen the nut. Loosen the cable at the rear caliper and have at it. Not too hard

I just jacked up both rear sides, and my left(when looking from behind) brake doesn't work, while the rear pad is dragging a bit.
