MIL light

Can anybody help me track down the cause of the MIL light coming on and staying on? I have a 1996 Maxima with 58,000 miles on it. Car starts and runs fine. Gas cap was tight. No fuel additives added. Don't see any hoses off. Please advise. Thank You Greg
