Odometer Broken!!!!! Please Help!!!!

I was driving my 1996 Max SE on a short trip from college to my families home in Ohio, when I noticed that my trip odometer was stuck at 299 and was just about to roll over to 300 miles. I reset the trip odometer but it did not record any more miles while I was driving about 45 mph. It is stuck and my odometer won't record any more miles. I know this is sort of a good thing, but I don't want to sell my car without the odometer working and it will screw up my oil change appointments. Please tell me what the problem could be, so that I could possibly get it fixed. I tried the fuses, but they were all ok. Thanks for any info..

I had the same thing happen to me.
I also have a 96 SE. I have 75,000 miles on the car. The trip odometer stuck when it was about to roll over (like 299 to 300, or something like that) and the odometer stopped working. The speedometer worked fine, as did all other gauges. Only the odometer and trip odometer were not working. I thought I was going to have to get a new gauge cluster.
After stopping for gas, when I started the car again, the odometer was working. This happened intermittently about 10 times during a period of a few weeks, but would always start working again after turning the car off and restarting it. Then it stopped happening. It's been about a month now and it has been working fine.
I've also seen this same problem posted on the board, I think at least twice. I wonder if it's an age related problem with an electronic component that is just showing up on cars that are 5 years old. How many people have had this same problem? Is it always on a 96 Max?

Well, I had to change out my speedometer, and it and the odometer are changed at the same time. My suggestion is to find one at a salvage yard, ( usually have to buy the whole cluster) and it will probably cost you around $100-$150. Find a GOOD mechanic that knows how to do this, and he can change the mileage to what your car has. I was charged $50 by mine. That way, I have no worries of Mileage fruad.

My odometer has been doing this off and on for the last year or so. In the past it seemed to fix itself after the letting the car set for a while, but now hasn't been working for a week or so. Read in another post that someone fixed theirs by replacing the ignition swith. Don't understand how the ignition switch would affect odometer.
As a side note I've found that this causes really poor gas milage.

well
my "b" odometer (trip) went out once after a pothole. I went to the dealer to get an appointment (under warranty) and on the way back i hit another pothole and it started working. Its been about 70k since then and it sill works (Shrug)

Possible Purchase of instrument cluster

The 95-96 odometers are gear driven. When you press the reset button you disengage the gear drive so that the numbers on the trip odometer can roll around to zero. Sometimes the gear drive gets stuck in the disengaged position. If pressing and releasing the button several times doesn't re-engage it, you may try a very light shot of CRC Electronics cleaner or WD-40. If you use WD-40, try and avoid getting any on the numbers or the gauge faces.
