modified exhaust

So I was up north this weekend at a club member's house, and we had my maxima up on the lift to repair the exhaust, since I knew it had a leak somewhere. Putting it up on the lift was a bad idea....I found tons of stuff wrong with EVERYTHING. To start, the flex section was starting to go bad, but was all intact anyway. From there, the rear end of the rez was completely fallen off and fiberglass was hanging out, then there was a huge hole in the B-pipe after the rez, followed by two completely broken exhaust hangers which caused a cross brace to completely crush part of the tube in.

The solution: I hack sawed the rez out, and most of the pipe behind it before the axle. I then replaced it with a 2-1/8" straight pipe, and a 90 degree after it. Welded the broken mounts, and it's good as new.

Conclusions:
Don't put your car on a lift, unless you intend to find broken things everywhere.
Second, the stock exhaust system without the resonator doesn't sound any different, and doesn't drone at all.

Was this really that big of a suprise? 10+ year old car up North.....

The "cross-braces" did not crush anything, the crush is like the from the factory to clear that very brace (although I don't see how they could hit).

are you serious? What a complete waste! The broken hanger resulted in the exhaust resting up against that brace, and so I figured that one was a result of the other. And yes, I'm used to broken things and tons of rust.

well I wasn't sure, I've never had to deal with it. I like the fact that its gone, and it still sounds stock.

Interesting. My hanger broke a year or so ago but even then the pipe didn't touch, it would just ding it over bumps and such. There has been debate over the reasoning for the crush (some have said torque, others clearance) but no clear answer has been reached as far as I know.

mine was literally resting on that cross piece, since I had a broken hanger up by the cat too. It doesn't matter now anyway, the entire piece is removed and has been replaced by 2 1/8 and 2 1/4 piping. I lost the heat shield around those two 90's right next to the gas tank, but figured it was okay, since aftermarket doesnt come with heat shielding either.
