Anybody have any sound clips? I've heard Ironlung & DandyMax's cars with the cuttouts open, I think they both sound amazing! They also have Cattman Headers though. Any have anymore videos of their cuttouts?

Has anyone installed a cutout in their y-pipe? pics? I wanted to install this on my test-pipe...but its one of thos fake high flow cats from ebay... so the outer diameter is something like 3"

Y-pipe is the best candidate at this point...

This is the test pipe i got:

Flava did you consider a setup like this one? I'm quite happy this one is where it is, no worries about ground clearance and plenty of room for an electric cutout.

and i sort of agree with Nealoc...doesn't sounds quite so hot when open, but really not as bad as many other cars still

I had thought about it, but Im considering Cattman Headers and Im not sure if it would work with that setup.
ObsidianIce69,
Is that your setup? If so did you have it done locally or was it on the car when you bought it?

It's my setup but i didn't do it. It's Mike d's old car. unfortunately..locally there aren't any shops i really trust to do much to the car. The performance shops around here all paniced when i said i had a 1996 infiniti. Muffin muffler seems to be fairly good with piping...Meineke...well i like them ( the one i go to)..they know what they're doing but you won't be able to have them make any pipes for you since they crush bend their pipes. Cattman headers? never seen how they're set up but will that work well with you being boosted?

I had seen you had bought Mikes car, just didnt know if that was on the intial setup.
Muffin Muffler is pretty much the best shop in town in regards to welding and bending piping, but they told me they couldnt touch a cutout setup, which is what most shops ive spoken to have also claimed.
Headers show a really big gain for boosted and 3.5 setups.

do they really? hmmmmm, after a few other things i may look into that. What kind of gains are we talking? So they won't do a cutout huh? Well if you just need to cut and weld it in...i'm sure you could just find a good welder to do it. Have you checked with any of the performance shops that work on american muscle? I've noticed they're willing to do a bit more than a lot of places...but simply don't know/care a whole lot about imports...something like a cutout would be a piece of cake for them though.

You should take some videos of your car. Do you have Cattman Headers? That may be why.

Well, i finally found someone to weld the cutout up to the test pipe and installed it today.

I assumed it would be loud, but it is crazy loud and not in any sort of good way. When I started the car, i let it warm up a bit, and then opened the cutout at idle, loud!
I then closed the cutout and went for a cruise. Once I got on the highway and opened it, i did a pull to 7k, and it was insanely loud. The car did pull really good, but the noise is just ridiculous. It sounds an old nasty truck.
Even with it closed, my exhaust has a different tone. Im assuming its because of the extra piping that branches off to the side going to the cutout. Im thinking exhaust might be getting trapped in there, and then eventually exiting out to the catback. So with it closed its not as free flowing as it was before.
Im going to dyno soon, and I'll do some runs with it open and closed and compare. If there isnt a significant gain, Im pulling it off.

Heh, I remember when I was getting my catback installed and i couldn't complete it due to not having the connecting piece from the cat to the rest of the system. I ended up driving around for about a week that way, having mind boggling headaches, and getting dirty looks from cops. I will never go back to that setup, even a cut out set up.

it looks good. I'm very curious to see what the dyno says. The one time i opened my cut out i really don't think it sounded too bad, could just be me though. Maybe when i get mine running i'll need to get a recording of it.

I'll film a clip tomorrow. It got too dark by the time I was done getting it in.

Quick vid Kenneth made for me. Lighting is kind of bad due to it being close to night time. The short runs filmed outside of the car are with the cutout open. FilmingiInside the cabin, the first two short pulls are with it open as well, I close it towards the end of the vid. Once I have more time I will do any vid during the day.

After driving around again today with it, Im starting to get used to it.

Not much room to place it anywhere else, also with it being in the cat section, I can always remove and relace it with the cat for inspections.
It shouldnt throw a code as long as its not kept open for long periods of time, especially at low rpms.

flava, i have a couple vids with my cutout, and I know EXACTLY what you mean, mine is identical to your set up. like i said, i only gained 3whp on the dyno, so is it really worth it? been asking myself the same questions.

Not to bring a racing vid into this, this is my friends 12.5 sec nx i did a pull against. you can clearly hear my open cutout, it is extremely loud.

http://s69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...t=06123101.flv

here is one inside the car, loud. I was in st. george ut and heading to vegas, and the plate fell off, so i was pulling out of a home depot to go back to my buddies and rebolt it on.

http://s144.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=DSCN6209.flv

and finally one at idle...

No Cattman Headers. It does have a similair tone but it sounds fine enough that I dont mind. Im running a 2.5" exhaust after the downpipe with a chambered muffler so its quiet with it closed. It is my daily driver so I prefer it to be quiet most of the time and with a 3" its going to be semi loud.

Ill see if I can get a vid up soon of how it sounds.
