fried ECU

so, I'm faced with a task of getting a new ECU for a 98 5spd.
Is an Auto and 5spd ECU compatible?
I don't think I want the one from the dealer, they said it may be as much as $1000.
by the way, how I fried the ECU, I have no idea.

it will be cheap at a junkyard

check car-part.com

auto ecu will work on an 5spd
5spd ecu wont work on an Auto.

best bet is to match the year and transmission type for your car.

ok, I gotta look into that.
I got an offer for an Auto ECU from 98Max, same as mine, for $150CA.
Hope you're right, the Auto will work on 5spd.

it will but you'll throw a code. but the code will be related to the Auto tranny that isnt present. I think you idle might be a little higher, but other than that will fuction normally.

I'd still suggest trying to find a MT ecu rather than a AT one, especially if you cant have codes for emissions.

I'm in Toronto, so I'm not sure what the standards are here for something like this, but you're right, I'll keep looking for an MT.
Thanks so much!

Anything aftermarket worth looking into?

the dealer diagnosed it as fried.
It doesn't give off codes when checked manually with a screw, nor can a dealer computer read it. It's as if it's just not there.
The dealer mechanic was a friend so there is no "screw me over" business there.

I was also told by someone that the ECU is vehicle serial number specific.
How the hell does that work?

Here in Toronto as far as i know t omy limited emissions Knowledge, the all three 02 sensors on our cars must be functioning properly to get a good emission rating and pass it.

I would just try and get a 98 5spd ECU. If you can try and get the month of manufacure of the car that it came out of.

I have 97 MT ecu it should work with a problem on a 98 if you want it ill sell it to you.

Also yes any year will fit but if you go with 95-96 you will have a code for rear O2 sensor since the pin in in different place. I personally have a '95 mt in my '98 mt, Still have no problems with it.

Dont mess with other years, you will more than likely get a CEL forcing you to chase down certain emissions related components. Keep in mind build dates on 98's start in 97 so double check years.

i agree. try your best to keep it to your year.

production date is located on the body of the car... how to explain, when your sitting in the driver seat. if you open your driver side door, and look there. you'll see the white sticker with the info.
