Fuel related "Check Engine Light"?

Starting from the beginning.

Over a year ago my car wouldn't start. I noticed it wasn't getting fuel so I replaced the fuel pump with a cheapo from a local Auto store. Put the new one in and the car still didn't start. Come to find out it was the fuel pump relay. I had already threw my stock one in the dumpster. For the last year I have noticed a steady decrease in power all around. A few months ago I bought a used stock fuel pump from a fellow org member and never put it in. I just put it in about 4 or 5 days ago and man what a difference!! 2 days after getting all this power back from putting the stock fuel pump back in my check engine light comes on!!! What gives? I don't know what would have caused it.

2 days ago I went to the ECU to try and run the codes but guess what? The engine light went off. Just yesterday it came back on. I can't remember the procedure exactly for checking codes but I am not in a position to check it right now anyway. I just want you input from you guys on what it could be.

By the way: The only negative symptoms I notice right now is: Very low idle at times and a gas smell that I'm not sure is normal.

Without the code(s) from the light, your post is useless. Not being an ahole, but honetsly, it could mean just about anything. It may not even be reelated to the fuel pump in the first palce.

Get the codes and report, back. Otherwise, it's like shooting in the dark.

Understood. However, the post is not useless. It also teaches a lesson not to purchase cheapass fuel pumps. Go OEM.

Wow this really sucks. I have two codes. 0304 and 0705. Knock sensor and fuel system related codes. I think the fuel pressure may be messed up because when I reassembled everything when replacing the fuel pump I couldn't get the tube all the way on the fitting (seemed good enough) and I didn't install the rubber ring since I couldn't remember where it went. There may be a substantial amount of pressure leaking causing the code. I guess. Any suggesstions other than that? I think I'm going to buy a knock sensor even though I think it's throwing the KS code only because of the fuel pressure problem.

what did u expect?

when u take something apart and then forget or decide not to put the proper pieces together you get problems.

i do agree with you on OEM parts, i only replace with oem parts; "GO OEM GO"

I don't know where it goes. It's like a rubber o-ring that is like 5 or 6 inches in diameter.

Wrong. It teaches you not to go buying parts for a car when you have no idea what is wrong. (kind of like asking why your CEL is on without pulling the code).

It should also teach you not to make/think things like this....

You need a NEW O ring. dont reuse the old one. fuel pressure will not cause a KS code. a bad KS will cause a KS code. the code was probably always there but you never checked for it since it wont cause the light to come on. replace the KS, get a new O-ring.

The O Ring goes around the opening of the tank. look for an opening with an O shape. that is the same size.

That's crazy. I just checked my codes like 2 months ago and it was fine. So it's just coincidence that it went bad around this time?

Hey buddy you better watch driving that vehicle. If you are getting a knock sensor, more than likely your car is running lean(resulting in more power!). Continue to run like that and you will be making a larger investment. Goodluck and do **** right bro!

running lean makes more power? a knock sensor means you are running lean?

Holy misinformation Friday.

If anything it' safer driving it w/ a dead KS.

No chance of spark knock due to timing being ------>reed

It is best to have a properly working knock sensor. not better to have a dead one. a dead knock sensor = less power and poorer mileage. The engine can no longer adjust to the amount of preignition going on in the motor so it assumes the worst case scenario. But what zex said was more than wrong. It was completely idiotic.

Knock sensor is not that expensive especially if you have friends who work in a body shop buy it for you at a discount. Also, it doesn't take long to install.

Here is a link with instructions:

Ummm...the instructions at the knock sensor replacement link only work if you have the hands of an 8-year old. Good luck!!

On my probe, I replaced the fuel filter/threw out the oring completely. Smelled like gas forever after that. And in my max I finally filled up the tank, smelled like gas after that.

I'd suggest you think of a bad seal on a fuel filter as a gas-cap that is off, aye?
