tranny problem plz help

(summary)

i was on the highway and tried to shift into 4th but went into 2nd instead . once that happened and i rev'ed to 7800rpm i stepped on the clutch to release and tried to throw it into 4th but it wouldnt go into any gear so while coastin the highway in nuetral i finally got it to go into 5th and rode it home like that. p.s the engine is fine.

( problem)

while the car is off (not running) i can put the shifter into all the gears, but once i start the car i can't get it to go into any gear. if i put the car in lets say 1st gear and try to start it it will crank and try to move forward while cranking and if it starts the car will drive but i wont be able to switch to 2nd gear though . one of my friends did alittle research and found that a possible problem could be the pressure plate or clutch disc ....i was seeing if any knowledgable tranny guys could enlighten me on possible resolutions before i spend unesssary moola for a mechanics overview,or go out buying parts that won't help fix it thanks for any info .

* i changed the clutch slave hose bled and refilled master slave cylinder - still nothing

*next option- get the clutch and pressure plate, and throwout bearing kit.

*or get used tranny or rebuild

Your clutch is fragged. Don't drive it, or else you'll do more damage to the tranny.

If you want to be extra proactive, then while changing the clutch take the tranny to a tranny shop for them to crack it apart and inspect the bearings, synchros, and gears. Shouldn't take them more than an hour and you'll know if you need a rebuild or another tranny right away.

Like dg said it's your clutch and not a transmission problem.

This is a pretty common problem (hitting 2nd instead of 4th) - I did it 3 times in the first year I had my first maxima because 4th and 2nd are pretty far apart and I was used to driving cars that had 4th and 2nd closer together.

could possibly be a syncronizer ring inside the transmission, or possible a linkage problem sounds more like the rings though, also check the fluid condition, level, and viscosity.

No, it's the clutch.

When going from 3rd to 4th were you power shifting and accidently hit 2nd? It's odd that the clutch would go out after something like this.

Were you trying to slam it in gear, speed shifting, no clutch? Not saying it couldn't be your clutch, but i've seen some trasmissions refuse to go into gear after trying to shift without using the clutch being banged in gear, or forced into gear before the syncro's can catch up when using the clutch.

In that case the wheels will refuse to turn. The tow truck would need to drag the front wheels to move it.

Lockup was the wrong wording, i've corrected the cause...

With the engine shut off, in gear, if you depress the clutch can you move the car?
