Yeah, the thread has served it's purpose... Too bad 99 5spd's didn't have the advantage I wanted, TC otherwise it would've been a no-brainer. Besides that, 98 and 99 are like the exact same car minus some tiny details that don't bother me too much. What does the Amb temp feature do anyway?

Does the 99 HU sounds better or is it more powerful or does it just look different?

It is a 200 watt BOSE sound system...and I believe its the same as the 97-98...just a redesigned headunit. They are all prone to **** on you at somepoint however....just like the look of the 99 over the 98.

Traction control is way overrated. It's no substitute for careful driving. Especially the TCS on a 99 Maxima which I'm presuming is very rudimentary and not all that helpful compared to more advanced systems. If I had TCS I would have it off at all times, except on a really icy road I suppose.

The 99 Bose is good looking and it actually sounds quite decent, at least after adding some extra grounding wires in the engine bay.

But does the 99 sound the same as the 98?

Icy roads is what I'm worried about so if it was available for 5spd's I would like to have it.

Any 5spd will handle 5x better than an auto 4th gen on ice. Just get a 5spd and dont worry about it. I do not know if it sounds the same but my 99 sounds great for an 8 year old system

what do you think ppl did back when there wasn't TCS, like in my car.

just drive how you're supposed to and you'll be fine.. I've driven the same year 5spd as mine in canada and it did fine in the snow.

I'm sure it will do fine in the snow w/ or w/o TC as long as it has some good tires but TC couldn't hurt in the snow. Are the looks the only diff. between 98 and 99 HUs

NO car will handle well on ice....unless you have chains on your tires.

I think it is just a redesigned headunit...same speakers and amps so i would say its safe to assume its the same.

Ok, well with your guys' help I decided to start looking for a top of the line 98 or 99 SE for around $7k with hopefully under 85k miles. Does that sound like a fair price? Still not completely sure 5spds didn't come with TC because only 1 guy said they didn't and nobody really confirmed it.

On a side note, what should I be looking for to classify one of these as top of the line? Does anybody still have their window sticker from a fully loaded 98/99 Max?

this will help http://www.nissannews.com/site_libra...hives_nt.shtml

basically look up the 98 or 99 and check what options were available.

whats important ? well thats up to u to decide and compromise: ABS is basically a must have i think it helps in the winter. leather makes the car look higher class. fogs and spoiler are just for looks. sunroof is a must, the 16 5spoke wheels are a must have, especially if u can find the limited edition gun metal painted ones (unless u wanna mess with painting them urself). heated mirrors i think were standard but not heated seats, thats a MUST for any winter. what else ?

i duno but u have to decide what u can live without and what u must have. no one on this site can decide that for u my friend!

Well, that site confirms that TC was only for auto, thanks for the link. It would still be nice to have just a list of all the available options which I could go through while looking at a car to see how loaded it is.

must i choose the car for u ?

here is the list, or a table rather, of ALL the stuff u want

http://www.nissannews.com/site_libra...ma/specs.shtml

its on the same site, its there for the 97 and 98 but not 99 for some reason. i think the 98 should be like 99 % close to 99

dude i dont wanna sound mean or anything cause im not, but u gota do a little bit of searching and investigating on ur own. I know its easier to just make a thread and wait for all the answers to come to u, but what if someone is wrong and u believe them? check things urself as well thats all i am saying -- i like this thread btw!

and one last thing if u want a fully loaded max, ure looking at the wrong car/section -- get an I30T of those similar years

ABS was not standard.

My 99 SE is fully loaded and comes with every single factory option
I would not recomend getting a GXE/GLE (SE has way better steering wheel and 16 inch 5 spoke alloys) GLE only comes in auto unless swapped and GXE has no options usually. I do not have the window sticker on my car butheres the list:

Deluxe Seating Package-
* Front seat side air bags
* Heated front seats
* Heated outside mirrors
* Low windshield-washer fluid warning light
* Heavy-duty battery

SE Leather Trim Package-
* Leather seating surfaces
* Automatic temperature control
* 4-way power front passenger's seat
* Simulated leather upper door trim
* Passenger-side seatback pocket

Security and Convenience Package (S&C) -
* 8-way power driver's seat
* Remote keyless entry and vehicle security system
* Integrated HomeLink Transmitter (SE only)
* Power trunk release
* Illuminated visor vanity mirrors
* Variable intermittent wipers

I also have:

BOSE 200 Watt 6 Speaker Sound System
Anti-Lock Brakes
Sunroof

I think I have a link of a window sticker of the same exact car...let me dig it up

^ dont get a GXE ? my GXE is dressed up as a GLE, the only options MY GXE does not have is leather, BO$E (which i am lucky not to have and just swap in an after market mp3 player) fogs and spoiler and those lovely se 5spoke rims

everything else i got and yes its a GXE up here in canada

GXE is speed limited to 115 also....

IMO get a SE

SE's come standard with:

White Face Gauges
Spoiler
5 spoke 16"ers
Fogs
Sunroof
Body color grille/door handles
WAYYY better steering wheel
Stiffer suspension

To me it narrowed my choice to a 97-99 SE...no GXE/GLE for ME!

30 grand -- thats a lot, and that was 8 years ago

^^^^^^ cut the wire on the ECU (look this up in the stickies) and any GLE/GXE that was factory limited will now be UNlimited !

i like the crome trim, door handles and grille of gxe/gle

Do not cut the wire if you plan on passing emissions.....

It will trip your CEL and you will not pass emissions with a CEL light of any sort

did not know this, but it makes sense -- still why would u want to go over 115 MPH ? i hit my limiter on a few occasions, but thats when i was breaking up with my GF and driving drunk to nowhere in particular.

it doesnt bother me, i dont go that fast anyways, if anything then its a good thing that we have it, stops me from killing myself i guess

Haha I am just saying.....I have not hit more than 110 in the max...mainly because my rear tires are chopped and vibrate like a **** after getting above 95. We will see after I get new tires......

The fact that I'm getting an SE is st in stone, I wouldn't get a GXE because it's to cheap and no GLE because it's only auto.

Thanks for that windows sticker, it's exactley what I needed. Is that every single option available?

my tires are crap and on their way out. im broke now and in the process of switching jobs. when i moved the front tires to my rear the vibration went with the tires. i vibrates slightly between 100 - 120 km/h, but past that the vibration cancels itself out and its all smooth, so there is my problem either drive like a granny or drive like my *** is lit on fire

i have two brand spanking new goodyear eagle ga's in my garage, but i am cheap and only gona put them on before next winter. and get rid of the vibration finally.

sorry to go off topic here, so yeah this dude needs a max, lets hook him up.

so .. i say get a 99.5 sel or whatever they are called (if u can find one) and be done with it

Yes....traction control is the only thing that wouldnt be on there because its from an AUTO SE. Thats not my window sticker but its every single option avalible for a 1999 SE.

Why lock it? Keep it open so anybody in the future can refer to it or add with any other questions instead of making a new thread. People on this board have so much hate for reposts, I've never seen such an extent on any other car forum. Usually people will anser the question then politely say "oh BTW, here's a similar thread" or at least give a link then lock. Here people are like "SEARCH NOOB" and lock threads... FYI, free search tool on this site isn't all that great...

Reasons for locking:

1. It is all over the place.
2. There are already hundreds of threads just like this and I guarantee you that another noob will start a thread like this in the future.
3. You got everything you needed...and its 6 pages of basic info located in the stickies that most people will not enjoy reading.
/thread

Nothing against you...just read the stickies next time and you will get 90% of your answers.

Who cares about ABS.. I bet, no rather I guarantee if you auto X and drift as much as my friends and I do that you would be able to out brake 9/10 of the ppl on this board who swear by ABS.

OT: A driver needs to trust himself, I mean look at the new lexus its awesome that it parks itself but wtf happens when all cars begin having these electronic system eliminating driver control little by little.

spend your money on bigger calipers/ rotors, engine work, etc.

1 & 2. I've only seen one other thread besides this and it got WAY off topic and died.

3. Most of the things covered in this thread is pretty specific and I read ALL the stickies in this section and even printed some of the stuff I thought would come in handy later. I started this thread because not everything is covered in the stickies, only basic stuff.
