Alternator fix

hey guys, I'm getting my alternator fixed and the mechanic says that he has to disconnect the AC line to put in the alternator, says that he has to charge me an extra $75 to refill the AC fluid and to recharge my alternator, just wondering if he is B.S.-ing me cause I'm already pissed off that said he'd have my car ready for today but won't have my water pump done until weds.

He's BSing you. Grab a Haynes manual, show him page 5-12. This is in the 1993-2004 book so yours may differ. It's the alternator removal section. Show him step 12:

12. Remove the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts (without disconnecting the refrigerant lines) and slide the compressor forward.
Hope I saved you $75.

I wouldnt take the car to him anymore for several reasons:

- he can't get the alternator in/out without disconnecting the AC

- he CAN get the alternator in/out without disconnecting the AC but would rather make more money TELLING you he has to disconnect it, or charge you more money to disconnect it.

- "recharging" your alternator Just make sure when he removes the exhaust system to replace your water pump he doesn't charge you for new muffler bearings.

the water pump that he's replacing is the one in front, behind the engine, because my car has been leaking coolant, so thats why I need a water pump

have to drop the a/c compressor and take out the alternator from the bottom... does not have to take off any a/c lines... 20 min. out and 20 min. in for me...

While we're on the subject, does $135 sound like too much for removal + installation labor?
