Diagnose My Auto Tranny

Well, it would appear my transmission is on its last legs. But, before I go and blow a bunch of money on a new one, I figured I would get a general consensus from the .org, as well.

Stats about the car/tranny:
-135k miles
-Tranny cooler for the last year
-Has not been flushed in 2 years
-I had recently done some wiring work, but have since returned all the wiring to stock and SOLDERED it back to the way it used to be

Now the symptoms: most of the time it will only operate in 3rd gear, sometimes 2nd, and almost never 1st or 4th. Sometimes it will start in 1st, shift to 2nd, shift to 3rd, and then just never downshift when I come to a stop. Sometimes it just starts in 3rd. Sometimes it starts in 2nd and shifts to 3rd but then not back into 2nd.

Is flushing going to fix the problem now, though? I doubt it

I see the problem: it seems your car has an automatic transmission. Change it with a manual ASAP.

Maybe this fall/winter when it'll be sitting anyway. For now, I just need to get it back on the road without spending a crapload of money...

I went back in and returned it all to stock today, though. Soldered it, too, none of this crimping crap. Only stuff left with crimps is where I messed with it in the engine bay, and that's all tight. I'll be soldering that tomorrow morning as a last ditch effort to eliminate wiring as the culprit.

Anyone think a tranny flush is worth the effort at this point? Honestly, this tranny has to last me through August if it can, if not, I'll just have to suck it up and get a new one or fix whatever may be wrong.

No, flush wont help.

15k flushes are also an over kill.

Drop the pan and look at the magnets, they will be COVERED in metal flakes...

Coming along well. I wish I could just skip straight to the swap, but if I can't make this tranny last until August, that isn't going to happen

kinda sounds like mine was doing... the problem was that my torque converter went.. it wont down shift, or even go back to 1st gear, but its costly to fix and not fun to get to, i say go for a 5spd swap

Guys, I can't do a 5-speed swap right now Don't get me wrong, I WANT to, but I don't have the funds nor the patience/downtime to have that swap take place right now.

So you think it's the torque converter? How costly are we talking? I likely wouldn't be doing the labor because I wouldn't have the time to between work and school related stuff right now (and my parents would likely cover the cost of it).

I'm probably taking the car to the nearest Nissan dealer on Monday to have it diagnosed professionally (I don't trust the local mechanics). Once I get an opinion from them, I'll let you know. I appreciate the offer, though, Kev.

No matter what their opinion is, I'm not sure if I want them to do the work...Unfortunately, I don't have any tranny repair places locally, just general mechanics.

At least an hour and a half. I don't know that I would trust the car to drive that far, and I'm not having it towed.

So here's my options, essentially, both are equal distance: Nissan dealer or AAMCO.

What does the fluid smell like? What color is it? Rub it between your fingers, feel gritty?

if i was u, id go to jiffy lube and do a quick flush. they drain 1/3 of oil and add new oil. see if that helps before u lube urself up for nissan. your symptoms sound more like electrical than mechanical.

meanwhile, start looking for 5spd parts. this is your single best chance if its truely on its way out

I will be quite shortly, probably starting this summer. Like Kev said, though, the problem is fixed for now.
