Max having issues... HELP

My younger brother took over the 95 Auto I had. Car I believe has around 190K on it.

Only thing that is done to it now is just an intake and I believe it has the Z32 Fuel Filter on it from when I had the car.

Anyway according to my brother the car died twice yesterday while idling. It doesn't want to restart right away and when it finally comes back on he has to give it gas.

The other time it died he was leaving a friend's house and put it in reverse and it died.

He said it sounds fine and then all of a sudden it just dies. It starts up fine on first start up, after it dies it just cranks and cranks. And then when it comes back to life it is real rough.

Is this an alternator/starter issue? Much help would be appreciated. If I can find out the problem I can replace it for him.

It could be the alternator.

Here is a way to test it.

Turn on your car and keep revving the engine. Now tell your brother to open the hood and unplug one of the terminal of the battery.

If the car stays on than the alternator is good. If your car cuts off essentially or immediately it's your alternator.

Let me know.

It can't be the starter. Because your car wouldn't even crank if it was the starter.

Check your ECTS (Engine coolant temp sensor) or just replace for $20 - probably due if high mileage

See how dirty your Throttle Body is.. will give low idle

check the air filter and the tps
cause i had the same symptoms and it was my tps

I just went through what seems to be something close to this.

Mine would stall when warmed up, and "die" even while driving, if thottle was not being applied. Meaning if I were to take my foot off the gas coming towards a light, the engine would stall.

After cleaning the throttle body and in intake manifold, the problem was still there.

A remanufactured MAF sensor for $189.00 at Auto Zone seems to have fixed the problem - So far so good and it was obvious very quickly that the first "fix" didn't work.

check the maf. It could be fried and causing the stalling. Do not pay $190 for one either....

I will check the TB again, but I don't think that is the issue. MAF possibly. He didn't mention the CEL is on or anything we'll have to check when I'm there.

Any other suggestions?

One guy is selling his MAF for $65 in the classifieds. That is more than I usually see them go for on here. Just telling the OP that he doesn't need to buy a brand new maf and get ripped off.

Check for stored faulty codes.

Like abomb87 mentioned above, it sounds like an ECTS problem.

I'm having a very similar problem with my '95. It exhibits all those same symptoms with dying, especially when hot.

I replaced the ECTS and MAF (and EGR, IAC, FPR, O2 sensor) with ZERO change. It wont even start up and stay running right now.

It may or may not:
crank and crank and crank and never fire up
fire up right away, rev to ~3k initially then drop, sputter and stall out
fire up, run and idle fine for as long as 30 minutes

Sometimes tapping the throttle causes it to die, sometimes it will sit there and idle fine and rev almost 100% normal.

But it will never rev past 4-5k, so it never changes gears at WOT because its not even accelerating. It used to smoke black VERY bad (like a crop dusteR) but now it really doesnt.

Car is driving me insane, it's sat broken so long we bought an '07 Ford Fusion
