Does it really matter.
In an early post I let my fellow enthusiasts in on my minor trajedy. Anyway nothings I can do but move on. I don't know if other people notice this maybe it me or I am just a bit sensitive but I hate when you see someone who has one headlight brighter than the other. Some are so bad you can barely see one of the lights. I usually change both at the same time even if the other one is still good just so i don't have that problem. Anyway I recently purchased fairly new 97 headlights housings for my 96. My question is do anyone know if there will be a noticable difference with a new headlight housing and an old one. Do I need to purchase both. I like everything to look uniform. I hate for one to have a dull look.
yes
From what i've noticed the 95-96 headlight and the 97-99 headlight are not the same for sure..
I don't know about light diffusion from the casing but the appearance of the 97 style looks much more reflective just by looking at it..
For looks they are not the same;
As far as light coming out being the same i would also assume not because of the better relection pattern nissan implemented in the 97 style headlights

There is a difference between the lenses and housing >>
The '97 to '99 lens is totally clear. It has a multi-reflective housing and a cap that covers the bulb to prevent wasted light. THe '95/'96 lens is a old type diffusion lens (not totally clear) and the housing is of a single facet shape. The newer lamps will shine a bit brighter and more efficiently.
