My engine die ...

Hi guys I was driving my car and I notice that the fan was a little slow so I put it all the way to high and after 15 sec or so the car die and it feels like there battery is dead it didn't crank and the radio dies and the radar turns on and off ..so than I push it down a hill and pop the clutch and it start it after 15 or 20 minutes of drive it dies again .. I do smell something burning I'm not sure if it is the alternator but it smells somewhere around there kind of were the fusebox is on top by the altenator ..so can it be the altenator or is there a short in the wires I didn't have the chance to jump it with jumpers cause is raining ..if any of you guys had this happen please let me know ..

many thanks to all ..

sounds like you need to get a new battery for sure, and maybe an alt. have the alt checked at autozone or pepboys ... anybody that will sell you one will normaly check yours. batteries are funny ... they will seem to have a little charge left if you let em sit for a bit ... dunno why this is, but i have had it done to me too.

get the alt checked, get the battery checked - both can be done while still in the car btw. that is my first guess ... if it's more than that and you don't feel comfortable dealing with it, take it to the shop, but be ready to pay.

g'luck mate! cheers

Any codes? If you don't want to go to a shop just yet, do you have a multimeter? Test the batt voltage with the car and accessories off, then check voltage there with the car running (with no loads on it). Ideally, you should be getting 12.6v and ~14v, respectively. Without doing any actual load testing to determine how much your batt and alternator are putting out (in amps), that's the quickest way to tell.

dead battery cell, alternator is burning up too. when the alternator will not charge the battery, the battery in turn starts overheating and drying up one cell at a time. happened to me last year, always when its hot, it drains battery's much faster. thats why people put battery's in the fridge, to preserve life and re-charge.

to the last post. It's clearly an alternator failure. And it's a GIANT MYTH that a failing alternator causes the battery to go junk. The only time that happens is when the voltage regulator fails and overcharges the battery, not every time an alternator fails like most people think.

My battery is going to my fridge tomorrow. I don't want it to die. Cuz it's getting hot and battery is expensive.

Is it ok to put it in the freezer?
