Oil consumption

I have a 96 SE 5Spd and I use a lot of engine braking etc.

Does that explain why I lose 2qt of oil between changes, with no signs of a leak?

It's done since I got the car 7 years ago, and a recent compression and leakdown test showed the engine was 100%.

wow same problem i had except i was in an auto.. now i have 5 speed. I used to down shift like crazy throwing it in to first while i am doing 70... not actually in first but will be asap whenever speed drops... anyway i thought this was kinda cool because i would haul *** with cars until the final moment at the red light n then down shift.... tore up the transmission bad... 5 speed clutch will get bad if you do that too. My problem was there was no leak but i lost 2 and a half quarts and what happened is that the motor shoots to redline and there was a tiny little hole the oil was leaking from and getting burned off instant... i think thats what your problem is too. Now in my 5 speed when i beat on it i can actually smell the oil burning and when i go under it has a good amount of oil but it only leaks when i beat on it (high rpm 7400) This is why i am scared to take it to a shop for them to tell me that the motor is leaking ... that would suck.

that is SOOObad for your car man, I rarely downshift at all, brakes are A LOT cheaper to replace than clutches and trannys, hard on the engine too. I'd guess piston rings but compression checked out? hmmmm.......

You do realize stock fuel cut is at 6550? Unless you're overrevving on a downshift, you won't hit 7400 in a stock Max. Sure, our tachs are off, but not that far off...
