Are my diff bearings gone?
About 2 weekends ago, I put in the 5th gen clutch setup in my 97 SE. Even before the clutch started slipping, I knew something was wrong. When I go around corners while on the throttle, there is a pretty harsh vibration that can be felt in the steering wheel. Even if I try to take a long, sweeping corner kind of fast, I can feel the vibration.
Also, there is a "clunk" when I dis-engage the clutch, and I can move the driver side axle up and down where it goes into the tranny-in and out as well but more so up and down, as in toward the roof of the car and back toward the ground.
There are no noises to speak of that I can hear, except for the "clunk". Could this be my diff. bearings, or someting else? My Max has the stock 5spd tranny in it w/ 168,xxx miles, and had the stock clutch before I put in the new one(what a difference by the way,5th gen parts FTMFW!)
This is my 1st 5spd Max and I have never had to deal with this problem before, and I would greatly appreciate any help.

It's a pity you're just looking at this now after having pulled the tranny this month.
The up-down play sure sounds like bad carrier bearings, sorry. You might want to take it to a tranny shop and see if they agree.
