When taking auto tranny pan off

to clean the magnets do u have to take off the return line to get the tranny to force the fluid out of the TC ? or simply putting the pan back on and refilling with the ATF is fine ?

When I last serviced my tranny I just cleaned the magnets and pan, installed new gasket and filter. Used the FSM for tightening sequence and used factory nissan ATF << I think it was 5 qts and at +/- $6 ea.>> I dont think you'll be able to get it at your local autozone etc, don't use merc/dex ATF, I read somewhere that the viscosity isn't correct for performance.

Matic-D only is really preferred, viscosity and additives are the only difference. I've used regular Dexron III in all my autos, not an issue (short of me being on my 4th trans now, but had nothing to do with fluid type). According to some of my friends down at the Nissan dealer in TN (where I worked for a short bit) they've seen some problems in the Titans from not using Matic-J or Matic-K.

To the OP: Wouldn't worry about flushing out the TC, if you want to do a complete 'flush', follow the VQpower (or motorvate?) instructions with the cooler line.

ok thats what i wanted to know about the cooler line.

i thought ATF did not have additives, unlike an engine oil, thats unteresting matic-d VS dex III

pmohr is correct matic-d is preffered, titan being a truck will naturally have a torquier tranny, if you like to floor ur max or run it you'll be requiring your tranny to handle a lot more torque- this'll probably lead to fluid break down on viscosity because of added heat especially if ur not doing suggested maintanance on tranny. Autozone or Bennett have an additive which they claim brings DEX up to spec it's a littleover $10, Personally i'd rather spend an extra $10 to buy the matic-d at the stealership and run it with the fluid it was designed to run on.

so matic -d IS actually different from DEX III

the manual does say that DEX III can be used, but i guess its just one of those things u should just get at the dealer and not worry about, ok

DexIII will be fine. No need to buy Nissan fluid. Check the fluids forum.
