Is it time to rebuild already, 95k

Well ... my input shaft is talking to me ... has been for a couple months. I konw this is a "do asap" job, but I am a bit strapped at the moment. So, how long has anyone let their IPS bearing go? How much noise was it making? What else do I need to replace while I am in the tranny ... besides the clutch?

I need to re-read the sticky on the rebuild .. get a parts list, order the parts, and pull / tear into it. I just don't wanna ... But .. I am certainly not letting anyone else touch my car ... and then try to charge me for it - no thanks! As long as I am able, I will do all my own work!

Cheers!

I bought that. Blackbird did the install for me and he said it is a nice looking kit. They are all GOOD bearings. I have yet to install the tranny, I think UPS lost it They won't tell me anything about the tracking number so blackbird and I are sorting that out. I plan to install next month since I only had this week off and UPS ****ed me over.

Thanks Kevlo ... hope you get your trans back soon! Stupid UPS! I try to ship through DLH ... if not them, Fed Ex .. but I don't like the USPS or UPS much. gggrrrrrr

edit: I have a 98 ... so dunno that this kit will work. Tis a shame!

That kit would work for any 4th gen VLSD trans (according to the picture). Assuming the kit is EXACTLY as is shown in the picture, that is a kit that is only complete for a VLSD trans, meaning if you have an open diff trans you would need a different driver's side differential bearing and a different driver's side axle seal. Again this is assuming that the kit you receive is exactly as pictured. That's a pretty good price for all that stuff.

Off topic I've never had a problem with UPS or Fedex - I have had multiple problems with USPS and a singular problem with DHL.

Neal, Open Diff is non-vlsd right? Just wanna make sure. I couldn't imagine them re-designing a trans for 97-98-99 Max's, but who knows. That kit looks hella complete and I am sure it'll be a lot of fun to put in too. : I'd say i'm looking forward to doing this whole thing, but only to know it's done right and it'll stop that stupid spinning / rubbing noise. It's not leaking or anything, but I don't want it to get that far either. I have rebuilt Auto (350 turbo) tranys, but never done a 5 spd. I've been told it is easier, but ... I am still a bit frightened. The sticky is pretty thurough so I don't anticipate any problems. Fingers crossed! It's still gonna be a few weeks before I can get to it.

Thanks for the info!

Cheers

Tell the seller you want the open diff one and he will ship the right one.

I've seen rebuilds needed anywhere from 60k to 200k.

As for the synchros, replacing them won't help shifting a whole lot, and it adds a good bit of work and doubles the cost. (You'll need a press to do them too).

If you have pullers and a bearing splitter, it shouldn't be too bad. It's possible to use a cutting wheel and chisel to cut/crack them off but that gets highly abrasive dirt everywhere and isn't exactly a picnic.

I would suggest that you pay a shop to pull the bearings that are giving you trouble. It's easy for them and cheap for you.

+1

I've got an AE VLSD that surprisingly needed a rebuild (diff bearings bad) at 40k - sometimes they just get it really wrong when it comes to shimming...

Ceasar ... LOL how funny mate!

40k is a suprise - and on a VLSD! I actually am a bit supprised that I need to rebuild at only 95k. Guess nobody can tell how long an A32 man trany will last. Shame Nissan didn't build it better to begin with. hehehehe
