p1320 help!

Hey guys,I just did and oil change and filter change on my car. Also put in new spark plugs and last but not least installed my leather interior.Decided to check my engine light codes..and i got a couple but i knew what they all where except this one..no i checked the stickies and it said crankshaft position sensor now i never had this code before when i had the other codes.Wondering did changing the spark plugs have anything to do with it.I cleared the code and tomorrow when i drive home and stuff ill see if i notice a difference. But can anyone help me out with any advice of info or anything?thanks.

There are 2 of them, one by the starter which metallic shavings can build up on so you can just clean it off, and one on the front of the engine by the oil filter. If you do a ohm test on this one it should be around 400-500 ohms. I actually first started getting that code when I had a ground problem actually. Let me know if you need the one on the front cause the new one I got from nissan did nothing for me since it was a ground problem.

Ok thanks man...well the result of this problem is cuasing my car to spudder alot and shake when press the gas or when i have the car in drive or reverse it shakes and spudders pretty bad.I changed my oil and oil filter to wondering if it has a problem to do with that. Also one of the screws that going into the coils that go on to the plugs in the whole has cracked off inside the coil that holds it down.May not be grounded right but its still in it and another one is hold it down.Could this be the case?

P1320 indicates one or more coils is going bad. it is almost always caused by a bad power transistor inside a coil.

EDIT: given that you just changed your plugs, you likely messed up one of the coils or didn't connect one properly. are you getting a misfire code as well?

There seem to be a lot of threads related to this, but since this is the most recent I guess I'll post my question here.

I got the p1320 code on my '99 Maxima about a month and a half ago, I decided to just have the code reset as I'm trying to be careful with $$ and am barely putting miles on the vehicle atm.

I only notice minor sputtering when I am idling at a stop sign or street light. I've never noticed anything when actually driving. The light came on a few nights ago when I started the vehicle and it went off after 24 hours, which I believe means that there was 1 misfire but not another in the next 24 hours.

My question is whether it's ok to wait for the car to start behaving worse? Or am I at risk of damaging say the catalytic converter if I don't take care of this right away?

The local mechanic seemed to think I could probably wait for noticeable problems. They quoted me $750 for six coils and the labor. I asked for pricing on the coils themselves and he said they are $100 a piece, which makes the labor cost sound a bit high if it's only a 0.6 hour job as he has it listed as.

I'm currently awaiting prices from Dave B, assuming he still provides them. But I won't be installing them myself as I don't have the tools and the labor cost isn't worth risking messing it up myself.

ok I just re-read the thread. just to clarify -- the coil screw was NOT broken off before, right?? I'm assuming you broke it off when you did the the job?? and then the sputtering (aka misfire) started??

in any case, I'm quite certain the broken screw is related to your P1320 and your misfire. you need both screws to hold down the coil tight and even on the plug. you need to get this fixed soon. any competent mechanic with a screw extractor can do it in 15 minutes (they drill a small hole in the screw shaft, and then use an extractor to turn it out). make sure you bring a compatible replacement screw with you (i.e. don't let them use any old screw laying around their shop).

so get this fixed first and see if P1320 goes away. if it remains, then you'll have to drive it until you show a misfire code to ID the bad coil. if the misfire gets bad (flashing CEL) do NOT drive the car. you will clog your cat & O2s and get a thick layer of carbon coating your combustion chambers.

you may be wise to have 2 coils (one of each - front & back bank) on hand & ready to put in when then misfire gets bad. then you can change the coil on the fly & not have to worry about driving with a bad misfire.
