Anyone who has sold their 4th gen

I'm at the point right now where I'm almost sick of putting money into my 98 because I don't feel happy with it. I've put a lot of time and money into it but it's just not pleasing me at this point. I love the car but I'm thinking of selling it and taking a loan to buy an 03 max. I'd like to stay in the max community but don't like the newer models so 02-03 will be the choice. My issue is that I have some mods on the car that are custom. 00vi swap, rewired lights (bumpers, fogs, 9007 upgrade, sidemarker lights), painted dash, cleared tails, AE'd headlights/bumpers/corners, cattman b, greddy muffler, (havnt installed the y-pipe because of this issue). My question is to you guys who have sold your cars. Did you de-mod everything? Sell it as is? What? I'm trying to think ahead because I don't want to sell the y, de-mod things, and go back to stock if I don't need to. If I need to do that to sell then I will. Just need some opinions. Thanks.

Just a suggestion--list it on the org, and people will be more receptive to your mods.

Yeah, I'd say unless you're in a huge hurry to sell it, post it on here first at a good price with mods in mind for about a month... if nobody buys it then, I'd suggest starting to part out the mods and sell without them somewhere else for less..

But dibs on your foglights if you part them out

I think that if u try to sell ur max within this community, you will get SOME value back for your mods, because the average joe out there that is looking for a car does not want the mods you have created.

Out there on the market the mods dont cost a thing to those who dont understand them. Selling the car through here MAY yield a better value because this community values such mods...

outsiders won't give you any extra for performance mods. Best bet is sell it here or de-mod.

I de-modded, regular people do not like modified cars.

no you dont sorry ha. I'm not parting the car. If anything I'll sell some things but not everything. It is my DD so I don't have time to take parts off like lights and all and wait to have someone to ship me their stock parts. I was thinking of selling on the org but I'm not sure anyone would want it. The only things to part would be the B pipe, y-pipe, muffler and 00vi. I'm not in a rush right now. I have to make sure I grab a better job then I'm in now because I'll be taking a loan for the new car. My buddys brother has his dealer license so he might start looking at the auction for me. Unfortunately I can't do a GI sale in the FS forum so I can't see if the car will actually sell. Just thought I'd gauge some thoughts in here.

i def would de-mod unless you can get back pretty much the money you put in the car on the trade. I had an illumina/h&r setup with less than 3k and brand new proxes4 with the same mileage. had the stealership pay off my car loan and I was about 200 short of the money i spent on mods for the car.

i understand what you're going through. and you'll feel a lot better with a newer car. I had dished out 3k in a front suspension overhaul, and the end result was I still had a leaking rack and a leak in the gas tank. the problems won't stop. for me i'll pay more for the peace of mind. maybe if I make more money I'll make a project 4th gen, but damn its good to be in a new car.

you're gonna miss her though. i still miss mine

Most people will not notice any of those mods you did on your car.

rewired lights (bumpers, fogs, 9007 upgrade, sidemarker lights), painted dash, cleared tails, AE'd headlights/bumpers/corners, cattman b,
So basically make sure the Vi is operating correctly before you sell it. Now it's up to you if you feel like "de-modding" is worth your time and effort to maybe get a couple extra bucks. Now if you get buyers before had then that would be great. To me there isn't much you can return to stock besides the intake manifold.

I took off all my mods; ypipe, cat, catback, ecu, intake, vi, udp, kit, wheels, sway bar. Red/clears and coilovers are comming off in a couple weeks. Ive made WAY more money selling that stuff individually than I would if I had left them on the car

sell it to a younger kid who may feel that its worth a little bit more if its modded already. i sold mine as is to a high school student who liked the fact that it had rims, exhaust, etc. someone out there will understand that you put 'x' amount of dollars into it, and that the price reflects it somewhat. atleast i think so...

maybe if you added a kit and wheels, you might like it a whole lot more....
but as far as selling it, i would part it out, and sell it stock, that's your best bet in getting most money out of it....

Well there are 131xxx on the car. Its in pretty good shape for the year but not the best. I can't really part anything out. That wasn't really the question. The question was to demod what I did. The VI is the only thing to take off and part out. The rest was just smaller mods that can be reversed (most of them). I would love to find a younger guy who wants the car. Not sure if I would find that tho. For a highschool kid the car is in great shape and is a good place to start working on. I just don't feel like starting there. I was all about putting the money into it for rims and kit and all that but now it just feels to me like the car is too old to put that kind of money into. I might not be able to part out the car in the future from mods I would do now, if that makes sense.

then dont go any further and sell the car, you are right the car is too old for mods, unless u want the mods to outlive the car...do u want a car thats worth lets say 1000 that becomes a rust bucket and have 2000 dollar rims on it ?

just an analogy

That why I want to sell. A lot of nice cars on here are starting to be parted as well. It just doesn't make sense to me now to spend so much money on it with 131 miles on it. Paint, kit, audio, rims. That's a couple g's. It'll be more than the car in a year or so and only audio can be moved. But the problem now is to find someone that would want it and to make sure I have enough $$ to take a loan.

Well there arn't many I35's in my price range that I like. I've been looking around but still am going for the 03 Max. Problem with selling my car is that if you look in the Max For Sale forum there are a lot of 4th gens for sale. I don't think I'd have luck on the forum selling it.

haha my buddy had an 87 supra. He had some problems with it tho. I havn't really looked elsewhere besides the maxima. I don't know if I'd like another model car.

I do plan to put it on the nyc forums. Put it for sale in my town, there are a lot of highschool kids that might want it, up on this forum, and we'll see what else. I might end up trading it in somewhere I find a nice max and just take the $1000 hit. I dont know yet. I still have to figure out if this is even possible.

well after talking to my father I doubt I'll be able to pull this off. Since I'm not considered full time at my job I don't think the bank will give me a loan for this. I would have to wait till I have a full time employed job I guess. Has anyone found a way around that detail? Besides the bank where have people gone for loans?

what exactly is your problem with your car besides you don't like putting money into it? i've thinking about gettin a new car lately and after the test drives and gettin mad at the dealerships for only wanting to give me 6Gs max on my car i decided its now worth it. first reason i am still in love with my car and it will be a cold day in hell before i sell it for 6g. second reason it is still a head turner and ppl are surprised when they ask and i tell them it's a 98. third reason, the newer cars i can afford don't feel like an upgrade to me. i was always compromising something from the max. one didn't have leather, the other had like 20 less stock horse (which was a huge turn off), another felt like a luxo econmy car. basically i figured out that for the money i'm stickin with the max. i wanted to trade or sell to get the most out of my car before it's worth nothing, but it will be paid off in 3 months and i know i can drive a car that's paid for. just my experience. it took me til almost trading it to realize. hopefully you will realize it's not the bad of a car, even if you do dump some money into it you will never see. you'll at least enjoy it while you have it.

If you are getting 6gs for your car, sell it and upgrade to the 6th gen or even a 5th gen. When my car had 100k miles on it, i got an offer for 9g's. I didnt' sell it at that point. But now i'm selling my car for $1800 with stocks rims and $2300 with after market.

that great for you. The fact your mad you only get 6g's is weird to me. 4th gens arn't even worth that any more. Suggested retail of my car is 7g in excellent condition. If someone offered me 6g for it I'd probably be selling it right now. I love my car but in general I love working on it. I like doing mods but as I stated in probably 3 other posts, it's not worth putting the kind of money into it when it will die in a few years. Yeah I take good care of it so it will last over 200k I'm sure. I'm just not willing to put a couple g's into this car when I could put them into a newer ride. Putting new paint, a kit, rims, a fixing little problems along the way will end up being a lot more then the car will be worth and I probably won't be able to part out the mods after that. Other cars are not worse then the 4th gen IMO. If it doesn't have leather...so what? It's a cheaper car and then you buy the leather seats elsewhere. I'm actually looking for cloth interior in the 02-03 now because I can save money buying it and come here to find someone parting their car for the leather. The 02-03 doesn't lose hp to the 4th gen. It's got an extra 65 hp. I'm not sure what cars you're looking at. The point is that since I spend so much on my car that I would rather start putting money into a newer car that will last even longer than my 4th gen. The next car I buy will last till I'm in my late 20's I'm sure.

maxima985spd- I'll pm you right now

unless you are selling to another tech junkie, aftermarket stuff tends to hurt the price of a car. maybe not hurt it, but it doesnt help. the majority of buyers out there trust stock over not stock

I agree with most of the other posters. Get rid of the mod's and sell it stock. Personally, when I see someone selling their car with a lot of mod's on it, I tend to think they drove the h*ll out of it. I know it's not necessarily true, but I imagine many people think the same thing. I will also say that maintaining an older car is almost always cheaper than getting a new car. Especially if you don't have a full-time job, why get into a payment? Save your cash and fix mechanical issues on your car, and forget about cosmetics for now. Good luck!
