I was just searching on car-part.com for '99 engines - since I blew one today - and did search for Cali spec engines in the Midwest and found very very few. Of course, they will move around - but would you expect to find a lot of Cali spec Maxes in say New Jersey?

I just checked, and there were 80 non-Calif spec 1999-compatible Max engines and 6 Calif 1999-compatible engines available in New Jersey. That doesn't sound like a majority to me.

Searching California for Calif-spec engines shows about 3-to-1 in favor of non-Calif-spec engines available in California.

I stand by my statement - Calif-spec engines are clearly in the minority - everywhere I looked on the coasts - California and New Jersey.

Not that this matters in the least, but I confirmed what I thought I was seeing earlier.....
Well I bought my car in Massachusetts, and it has been in Massachusettes its whole life and was sold at a dealer in MA. Both my parents cars are California spec and I know numerous locals who are california spec. I am just saying that you will find more fed spec cars in the midwest because there are less people and less pollution while in the northeast and california, it is way overpopulated and there are wayy more emissions so therefore, california spec cars were sold in that state. This is what Dave B told me when I first found out my car was Cali-spec. I too thought that California-spec cars were only sold in CA but i was convinced otherwise.

I'm just going by the count of available engines of both types, state by state. That's my way of counting the relative numbers of both types, by counting the headstones in the salvage yards in a state. Even California has many more fed-spec engines then Calif-spec engines in the yards - possibly because lots of people moved there w/fed-spec cars. That could really stir the pot....

Calif-spec cars could be sold anywhere, and probably got shuffled around to meet demands for inventory.

EOF.

if you are boosted, you should get them. if not, prolly not worth the $$ and time. cattman headers,y, catback is a dream setup !

Coming soon around september we will finally see a before/after run of y-pipe vs headers on a 4th gen, I have offered a free install on headers, all he has to do is pay for 2 dyno runs.
wait, what hold on. Isn't adding the headers on a 5th gen MORE significant than a ypipe? 4th gen y-pipes replace both the front cats eliminating more restrictions. On the 5th gens, isn't one of the front cats left in place UNLESS you do a header swap? That alone would make headers much better on a 5th gen than a y-pipe. Unless I understood your post wrong...

Only on 2000 cali spec's and 2001's would you need headers to eliminate both precats (although you could do a fed spec front exhaust manifold conversion in either case). 2000 fed spec's are just like A32 fed spec's.

Yes you did misunderstand it a little, that is EXACTLY what I was saying, adding a y-pipe when installing headers on a 5th gen was sorta implied in that post. I know, I did nothing to actually imply that, but I just assumed that regardless of 1-header or 2-header pre-cats that no one in there right mind would put headers to the stock y-pipe.

I probably should have worded it like this: ......and on a 5th gen adding headers/y-pipe is a very very very close comparison to adding a y-pipe to a 4th gen due to eliminating the pre-cats

I bought my 2k1 SE max brand new in Canada and it's cali spec, headers make a difference over the Cattman Y-pipe, I think on my 2k1 the difference are like 9-13 HP+ but I know those number will climb once the Vortech V2 is on. My 2 cents

But on a 99 cali-spec car the precat is only in the front header. The back header for all 4th gens, regardless of fed/cali spec were the same I think? Correct me if I am wrong. Therefore if one can get their hands on a junkyard front header and a y-pipe plus an 02 sim...they are basically fed spec.

Once and for all:

1999 Fed spec = both precats eliminated with y-pipe
1999 Cali spec = requires headers to eliminate front precat (or fed spec front exhaust manifold + o2 simulator)
2000 Fed spec = both precats eliminated with y-pipe
2000 Cali spec + all 2001's = requires headers to eliminate front precat (or fed spec front exhaust manifold + o2 simulators)
