Intake Manifold Discussion

Is everyone happy with the current options of intake manifolds?

Namely,

Stock Manifold

MEVI

00VI.

I am looking to get a custom intake manifold designed, and curious if someone else would be wanting to get one as well, so the cost of making them would go down. The design would be for FI (turbo/centrifigual SC) or higher compression NA.

waste of an effort. look up Kinetic (sp?). no gains on NA, but possible on boosted applications. it is an expensive endeavor either way, requiring some knowledge about airflow, cylinder fill rate, etc.

I have designed and built one for my 2002 SVT Focus, and have run it with some nice enhancement NA. But for a boosted VQ, I thought it would be an even better effect!

Yea, if you can something with ITB that would be hot. It sounds like you do these yourselves. You may be able to sell it if you can get a prototype and put it on dyno versus the 00VI since that manifold produces the most HP.

In your second pic, where are the ports for the injectors? (I know, it's for his FSVT, but they seem to be there in the first pic and not in the second)

Good question!

Those pictures were of the first mockup on the block, and the Injector Bosses were not welded in until the plenum had been put on.

That makes sense, seeing as it's only up on the studs in the head made me kinda think it was a mock up.

Ah hah, bosses...that's what I had thought they were called at first, but wasn't quite sure...

EDIT: Btw, is that some sort of service panel in the collector?

There is an extra opening in that prototype because we tried to mount a Cobra dual 57mm butterfly TB on it. We soon found that there was not enough hood clearance for the intake piping to make a turn into it. So... a single butterfly 67mm TB was used on the end.

Stock manifolds and our first prototype:

Latest design we are running:

i think the stock manifold could be hacked up for some pretty good gains IMO i know the GM FWD 3.8's throttle body makes a nissan look pitiful, one from the S/C3800 is like 68mm if memory serves that would be a nice upgrade

edit: BTW i would like to see ITB's matched to high lift n/a cams that would be sweet

yeah we need a bigger throttle body option ! i havent even started to look into swapping mine out for the pathfinder tb that some of the guys do here. also needs an adapter plate. some things might have changed since last i checked though. plug and play is always better !!

im running the (5th gen) 2000 upper intake manifold and the 2000 TB, which is the same size as the 4th gen tb.

For the VQ30, I'd want something that made similar top end gains to the '00VI, and made the motor sound more like the RWD VQ. ITBs would be sick, but a pain in the *** to tune with our limited and expensive options.

The only USDM RWD VQ is the VQ35, which will always sound different to the VQ30. A big part in the sound is also the entire exhaust system used in the Z33s and V35s, and good luck mounting up one of those mufflers on an A32. Means you lose the spare tire well.

The IM does play a part in the sound but not nearly so much as the exhaust.

What exactly changes the sound? It can't all be in the muffler... do they have equal length headers?

its mostly equal length and crossovers are what give that smooth powerful sound.
