Chattering in second gear..

My new clutch and flywheel are about 5 months old. with about 7,000 or less miles. For some reason i'm getting a hard chattering in second gear only. All the other gears grab fine. and its only from 1000 rpm to ablout 4000 rpms. then it goes away. then third there is no chatter. my buddy told me my es bushings were extremely thin when i changed my suspension. and a mechanic mentioned that the tranny mount may need to be changed.

Why is the clutch being slipped in 2nd gear anyway?

Moved to the appropriate forum.

it's not slipping, just chattering. it picks up speed fine. it's just really bumpy

I just got a new clutch about 4k miles ago, and I think I get the same thing when I get into 4th gear.

If it's the mount ... I think it would do it in any gear, especially 1st under initial load. Sounds like it may be the 2nd gear syncros ... or it could be the 2nd gear teeth. (btw .. I thought it was a common problem in 3rd to have this issue ... anybody?) 1,000 - 4,000 is our rev range really ... so it happens all the way to 4k, but what about after 4k ... same thing?

It doesn't sound like it would have much to do with the clutch in this case, I would imagine if it were the clutch ... you would have it in more than just 2nd gear.

yup i have it in third and second and its not my clutch... i think my gear oil is not too good. I power shift it when street racing i think that has something to do with it. What i do to get a smooooth shift is double clutching. It takes a while at first but you will eventually get fast.

I was initially thinking gear damage, but now the evidence is even stronger. Tranny rebuild, replace gears. (actually need to replace 2nd gear and the input shaft).

This "power shifting" stuff is a lot more damaging and a lot less powerful than a lot of people realize. This isn't a 4 speed you're raking here.

here's an update,

when the car is cold in the morning it does'nt chatter, up untill it gets warm. then hell breaks loose.

and the rev range is between 2000-3700 rpm's after and before that it is smooth as a baby's ***.

Could it be the lightweight flywheel itself, or the installation of the flywheel?

I read an article on gear noise, gear rattle, caused by the flywheel.

So you mean since I got my clutch job and they had to turn the flywheel, that might be causing the slip/chattering?

i don't know about your case, but in my case i got a new lightweight flywheel, and i'm starting to believe that, thats were my chattering is coming from. I don't get any slipping at all

The flywheel should exhibit similar symptoms if all gears. Maybe not as often or as severe, but I would think if a 1-2 shift chatters then a 2-3 shift should too.

You should take the car to a reputable tranny shop for an estimate. They will know right away.
