I just got new front brake pads today... and I'm hearing a slight squeal when I hit the brakes... is this normaL?

I had it done at an independent shop... and they told me that they need time to break in.. and that the squealing noise will go away after time.

Also, how much do a pair of new brake pads go for?

Thanks...

Brake squeal is a common complaint with disk brakes, on all makes of car. Volvo is especially bad in this regard. Blue Goo anti-squeal compound applied to the steel backing plate of the pads is effective in many cases. Please refer to the Haynes repair manual, page 9-7.

Did your shop reinstall the original shims, or new shims, or did they just toss the old shims? Shims are an important element in reducing brake squeal.

Some owners insist that you must use Nissan factory brake parts to avoid brake squeal. However, I've had good results with name-brand replacement parts such as Raybestos.

It might.

The going rate is $100 per axle. This price includes resurfacing the rotors.

Thanks DBM!

I think they replaced the old brake pads with ones from Napa Auto parts... are they any good?

Also, is resurfacing the rotors necessary since they told me I had like a 1/3 left on the brake pads ?

The brake squeal is really annoying...

Can't say. Never tried them.

The decision to resurface the rotors should be made on the basis of the condition of the rotors, not the pads. Rotors which are scored or warped or have excessive thickness variation should be resurfaced. Some shops resurface (or replace) the rotors on every brake job, as a matter of policy.

Go back to the shop that did the work. Ask about the shims. Ask whether they used Blue Goo or an equivalent anti-squeal compound. Some brands of brake pads come with a tube of Blue Goo right in the box.

to DBM

I just bought that blue-goo anti squealing compound for the brakes...

I'm going to see if that solves the problem... and one more thing, I didn't know the shop resurfaced the rotors as part of the brake maintenance.

Once again, thanks.. DBM !
