Drivetrane problem (no go)

Ok, headed to work this morning and shifted into fifth and heard a nice loud POP and all of a sudden RPMs and Speed fluctuate with ease just by pushing the gas. Just like on ice. From what I have been able to see the tranny is still in one peice but not 100% sure of it. When we loaded it onto a trailer it was leaking gear oil very steadily. Car starts and runs fine. Even shifts good into gears but it isn't getting to the wheels somewhere as if the clutch is stuck open. Any ideas guys? I was thinking the throwout bearing arm maybe? I'm going to try to get underthere and look at at least the outside of the trans tomorrow night.
Thanks!

The drivers axle is not in the tranny 100%. You may just need to pop it back in or you stripped the splines off where it meets the differential and youll need a new axle. Its pretty common for the C clip to no fully engauge into the differential. I have seen it before after a clutch job was done.

God I hope that's all it is!! Sounds like it might be though. I had forgotten the drivers was hard to get back in and I wasn't positive it was fully seated. I'll try it asap

Good call JSutter, I agree.

Also don't forget to top off with gear oil.

yeah, crap all I've got is napa brand! I had redline MT-90 in there. It does sound much more reasonable than what I was worried about and everything fits. When Iget home tonight I'll tear into her and see for sure. Thanks for helping guys! I'll post up after I check it out and/or fix it.

Alright guys, I found out what it is!!! You were close Jon. It was an axle but it was the passengers. The bracket that holds the middle of that axle snapped off and allowed the axle to slip out of the tranny. Anyone reading this have one of those on a car they don't need? It's a 5spd. I don't think I need the bolts but I'd like to get em. If you guys know anyone who might have this part PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get in touch with me! I need it ASAP.!!!! I'm going to post this in the classified section as well. Thanks!

That happened to someone else recently.

Check the classifieds or a junkyard. The u-pull-it places should have what you need. New from Nissan is over $100 for that bracket.

Jon, you think the auto is same as a 5spd? If so I'll try to find a ride down there and grab it. (the camaro broke down too!)
No way you're getting rid of it for free though!!
Dude, I'm mystified about how the heck I broke it!! I'd never have thought I'd see or hear let alone it being me that had one break!!

AWESOME!! I'll try like heck to get down there ASAP and get it. Shoot me a price too man.

The ABS ring is on the outside anyway and I think mine is still good... The pass axle in your 99 is shot isn't it..?

Whew!! Got it fixed! It was just the carrier bearing, splines on the shaft were fine. Although I did bust up my oil press sending unit but no biggie! Clutch feels better than it did before it broke the other day too. Major thanks to Jon, you're the best dude!

Haha! Yeah yeah, that top bolt on the mount was much closer and more difficult than I had remembered but I got it! Hey, when you said your old tranny sounded like a dumptruck, did you mean it whined loudly? Mine did cause I had to drive it like 15-20 miles (roundtrip) to get fluid into her and she whined mostly on decent to hard accel. Once I heard it I took it easy with her though. I just got if filled back up with napa crap and haven't take her for a test run yet. I'm thinking it will go away now.
Oh, you were right, those sunroof shims are very easy to get to! I'm going to try to get some tomorrow so I can finally fix that darn thing!
But yeah, thanks for saving my butt again! It was good to get back down there.

Ok, got some pics from when I fixed the problem. The whining sound didn't go away however. So I'm nervous about that but I'll get to it soon I hope.
Here's on of it still on the car.
The old still on the axle and the new. Pretty clean break right at its weakest points, but still... It's a pretty rugged part!!

Here's one of it completely off the car both peices

The axles are the same but the bracket is different from manual to auto.

Hmm, I don't know... The new bracket was from Jons parts 99 auto and it fit perfect on my car which is a 99 5spd. I think they had different identifying numbers on them but they seemed exactly the same, and fit exactly the same.?

Yeah It's amazing. And the only two that anyone has heard about breaking(so far) happen very close together. Mine in early August and the other happened in May of this year as well...

Hmm, interesting. So far mine is good, fit perfect and is working perfect. Although I do have a whine but I don't belive that is it. I'll get a manual one and do a comparison. I had both parts together, but I probably wouldn't have noticed an angle less than 3 degrees though. I'll check for leaks etc. Thanks for that info
