Ebay sts, take a look and input

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MEWA:IT&ih=010
This is the link to the short throw i was thinking about picking up. Since i'll have the whole exhaust off in a week or so it would be stupid not to do this. My question, anyone tried these ebay ones, i thought someone said they worked but im not throwing it on without being sure.

I think that the short shifter falls into the catagory with strut bars, as long as they are not made by pixi sticks it should be fine.

first nismo don't make any parts for the maximas so is not a nismo product
second its been disccussed a million times this is not a short THROW shifer this is only a shorter stick period read here for what a real STS is

Get the Ebay shifter ... you will be happy enough. It is not a "Nismo" part, but it's a decent shifter - had mine for a while now and no probs. Also, it did make the shifter sit closer to the top trim by the ashtray, but it doesn't hit even under hard shifting. I like it ... all I am sayin! :P

Maximus_pr ... I am not sure that the base of the shifter can varry too much, it must remain the same so it hits the same pegs in the trans. With our cars, we use a rod linkage system and if the base were different, it would push the rods out of place (I would think anyway). I think it is a shorter shift due to the length and the fulcrome (<-- ?spelling) point. I see it like this ... if you have a lever that is 10" long and you move it down 10" and compared that to a 5" lever moving 10" ... it's shorter no? Not trying to bust ballz here ... but I don't understand how it could be a shorter thro otherwise.

Cheers!

Alright, i had the same theory about the shifter as you, its a lever with a fulcrum, move the fulcrum up and the throw is less. Pretty basic geometry. Did the one that you bought say nismo out of curiosty. Did it have all necessary replacement parts, or is it litterally just a rod, and you transpose all parts?

Shortened my throw, in fact I even compared the two side by side and you could easily tell it was taller from the ball to the linkage arm. In fact next person to buy one please take a picture of it right next to your stock one. Is it a HUGE difference? Nope, Is it a big difference? Yes.

To the OP, search around this issue has been hit on a lot lately.

Well I had a similar one to that except mine didn't have the nismo decal on there.
I had problems with 1 3 and 5th gear cause it would always hit the shifter trim, eventually the corner of my shifter trim chipped off.

The height of the shifter is close to stock height but the bottom (shifter ball down) is lengthened for the short throw shifts.

Eventually I went back to stock and did what Kevlo911 did. (see sig for the link)

No ... just turn the thing around. It will hit if you put it in "backwards" but if you put it in just like you take the old one out, you're good. I didn't have any problems doing mine, some ramps a 12mm (I think), some time, and some sweat and it's in. If you do it "right" you replace the ball inside the shifter - dang it I can't remember what it's called.

The one I bought off ebay said Nismo on it, same rod in fact. It came in an envelope in the mail ... just the rod! No head but it did have some grease IIRCC. The metal ball on the rod sits inside a plastic housing that is split in 1/2 to fit around the metal ball. This is the part that people replace for smoother shifting. Make sure you use the grease, or the plastic will bind your shift points. It's a 6-7 / 10 job to do ... but really once it's done, you'll like it!

Cheers !!!! PM if I can help ya mate

Don't get it if you are putting on a universal shift ****. The metal is weak and the **** screws just eat right through. Eventually you'll have to tighten the screws all the way through until you have no more metal to go through.

Had it for 3 months.... Shifted fine.... Threads started to go through but I didn't mind. What I did mind was the fact that the shifter actually snapped in half while my brother was driving my car!!!!

He said he was throwing the thing into gear kinda hard but come on!!!!

Solution: Put the stock shifter back on, cut down 4 inches or so, and voila, same effect, stronger material (my bro has driven it hard plenty of times in the last couple of months)

you had a bad shift **** then mate .... my Razo is just fine. It came with an insert that you screw into the bottom of the ball, then the insert threads onto the shifter.

How do you put in the shifter "reverse"? Wouldn't that put it too far back?

Anybody not happy w/their shifter cuz it hits the front console? I'm looking for a used shifter. Thanks.

i dont think short throws on the max help with shifting any. when i had mine it it make the throws harder and less responsive than stock under hard fast shifting. even if you doing it for looks, the sts arnt even as low as you may want. i ended u getting my stock shifter cut a few inches and welding back on the top part with the screw threads. shifts much better and feels much nicer.

I need it to move the shifter forward cuz I'm using a 5th gen tranny. I could care less about the shorter throws.

Thruz .... using a 5th gen trany will push the stick back because the way the shifter works. (rods vs cable linkage) .... so if you get a 5th gen shifter (which you'll need) you will not need to move the stick forward or back, it fits.

When using a 4th gen trany and a STS, yes it puts the shifter forward of your "normal" shift points, but it does not hit the trim. Maybe mine is in backwards ... and that is why it sets forward. Maybe if I put it in the other way around it would hit the back trim ... ??? Not gonna take it all apart to find out anyway! Nobody I know has a problem with their STS hitting trim at any rate .... so buy it, if you don't like it ... it's 20 - 30 mins of your time to replace your stock one.

It is a short shifter. The height however will not be much different then OEM. The throws between gears will be much shorter though.
Now the snapping is something Ive heard about as well. I previously used an OBX shifter and it woked fine for me. I had it for many years. I currently swapped out to a B&M replica to see if there was a difference in them as far as shifting goes and there wasnt.

Thing is im not really sure what i want, i mean a shorter throw is cool, but im not racing. And what i really need is a shorter shifter to accomidate a flip out screen. I'll be putting a gps module in with a screen. Unless theres a non flip out screen that fit with the car but i dont know much about that.

How big is the screen?
It should fit without hitting the shifter. If anything just mount it in the top slot.
Many have flip out screens with no issues,
