Possible to fix hood struts/supports?

My hood struts/supports no longer hold the hood up.
Sure, I can put a stick in place when it's open,
but I shouldn't have to, and it looks harfarsed besides.

Does NE1 know how to fix or maybe "recharge" them?
Or do I have to replace them?
If it's replacement, where's the cheapest place to get them,
how much am I looking at?
Would some from, say a Dodge work (and be cheaper)?

Thanks

You're better off buying replacements. Check ebay.

I'll trade you my good ones for your busted ones. PM me

I just installed a carbon fiber hood (~50lb's lighter than your hood) and my good struts will crack my hood, but yours will work perfectly

Don't purchase cheap hood struts from eBay. Those are known for breaking after a short while.

Go with some stock struts if possible.

And no, you can't "recharge" them.

I got the lifetime version at Autozone, and have had to swap them out about 3 times. They die about every two years. Just make sure you keep the receipt.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Guess I'll get them from autozone.
I expected they'd cost much bucks but $20 per isn't bad.
The vicegrip idea is a good one meanwhile.
Neo Raven456 - are you ever up around Danbury CT?
I'll save the old ones for you.

Good luck getting the ball joint that they mount to. I can't for the life of me get mine off the strut, can get the strut off the car, just can't get the ball out. Some struts come with the ball, some don't. I made the mistake of buying the kind that did NOT come with the ball. The stealership is C R A Z Y with what they want for EACH ... like $15 per ... that is $60 for 4 ball joints 11mm ... so, moral is that I use my stick and I am happy just fine! lol

That's what I've got going on too. Reckon one of these days I'll get some struts, but the grips work just dandy for now.

A few times I had the vice grips set too tight, now the strut body will catch on the piston and actually support the hood's weight on that marred surface (for about 10 minutes, found out the hard way just like how I found out my shocks no longer worked...).

Anyone use these hood struts in the trunk and remove the torsion bars?

I would love to this

got mine from autozone about a yr ago now and they still work flawlessly. They basically lift the hood by their self after i lift it up a little with my hand. I believe they were the "Mighty Lifts" brand.

Cheap and easy installation.

OEM hood struts are NOT a rip off. they last 10x more than autozone's $50 junks

It's already been said but the much less expensive "junk" has a lifetime warranty Once they break you bring them back to Autozone and they'll recharge them for free!!!!!!

warranty is probably against defects, not normal wear and tear

The reciept right in front of my face begs to differ. 1+ years on the autozone struts with plenty of hours on them. still going strong.

Its complicated.

Basically it means, you can bring it in and exhange it ONCE. Then you have a 90 day warranty.
