My 95 SE needs a new muffler. The OEM muffler is whisper quiet, even under hard acceleration. I would like a muffler that is a bit sportier sounding, without being excessively loud. Kind of hard to describe in words, but I want a muffler that you don't hear until you really step on the gas. The new two-stage muffler that is on my 00 GLE is like that, although I wouldn't mind it being a tad louder.

Any recommendations for what I'm looking for?

I agree the HKS is the way to go. Nice an quite at idle but nice rumble on acceleration.

I was told that more free flow will increase high end performance (more HP), and more back pressure (less free flow?) will provide more low end performance (more torque for street start?). Is that why newer Maximas have got two-stage muffler? If we put something/modify the muffler so that it has less flow/more back pressure, will that provide a little more low-end torque?
Just learning because I have very limited knowledge on cars. Thanks.

I just finished with my exhaust

here's my setup:
JWT Intake
Stillen Y-pipe
Courtesy B-pipe
5th gen muffler

Since adding the Y and B-pipes, I thought that the muffler would be the next restrictive piece. I knew that I wanted something quiet, so it was either the 5th gen muffler, my stock muffler, or the Apex'i WS. I heard most aftermarket mufflers reduce backpressure so at the low end, I'd lose power. I decided to go with the 5th gen muffler since it gains in the low, mid, and top range while keeping it relatively quiet. With all the new exhaust components, I'm happy with it. Definitely more power and I wouldn't want it any louder than it is. It's quiet compared most modified Hondas, but it's a lot deeper than stock.

Re: I just finished with my exhaust

Can you post a picture of your exhaust? Does it matter which trim Maxima you get the muffler off of.? How much did you pay for the muffler?
Thanks
