Isnt it just a leather piece around a metal band?
You just snap it into place. There are clips on the shifter surround.

I hope that helps, but i'm not 100% sure i know what youre referring to.

You dont see a rubber band or ring on the outside, the ring thats around the bottom of the shift boot just snaps into place underneath the trip piece that goes around the shifter.

thanks for your replies guys but im referring the the removal of the shift boot from the shift rod. there's a rubber piece and small 1 inch diameter ring that keeps the shift boot from pulling away from the rod but im not sure how it went.

The shifter boot comes up and then folds back on itself like an inch or so which is where the rubber band is, but no you shouldnt see it after it's installed.
