Weak trunk springs

It seems the springs have gotten weaker, so my '96 trunk barely opens when I hit the button. Is there a way to adjust this, or do I need to buy new torsion rods?

Thanks.

It doesn't open all they way by itself, you have to lift it. All the button does is release the latch.

my buddys 95 used to pop up about 8 inches (with a spoiler on it too) when he released his trunk.

mine does the same as the OP is describing, just unlocks the latch and sits there not moving up. (brand new latch too so that wount help).

i tried lubricating all the moving parts and supporting rods too, any one got any ideas out there ?

This problem had been bothering me for a while too. I came up with solution using a bungee cord on the passenger side of the trunk springs. The cord adds just enough tension to cause the trunk to pop up by itself when I open the latch. I know it may not look the greatest, but it does not encroach at all on the cargo area. Here are some pictures...

The bungee cord method worked! I had to use two on each side, but it opens completely now!

DAMN, spent like 20 minutes running around the house in excitement, to realize that the bungee cords are in my mom's trunk and she is away for the weekend.

Thanks

Great idea, but I wouldn't want friends to see bungee cords holding it open. Sorta like a broom handle holding the hood up: it works, but my passengers, who use the trunk, may wonder what's holding the rest of the car together. At least it's good to hear I'm not the only one having this problem.

I was showing my dad this, and he actually had to bend inside my trunk to see the cables. Mind you, I'm using bright blue jumper cables. It's pretty well hidden.

To the OP and others....Why do you even care? As long as the trunk opens correctly, I can careless.

It's a free excuse to work on our cars and make them a little better. What's wrong with that?

I'v had my maxima sence it was new. The trunk has never opened all the way up on its own. I don't think it is designed that way. However,....the bungee cord is a good idea. Anything can be made to be better. I think I might try that if I can make it stealthy.

That is a factory Bose 6.5" if I am not mistaken. If it is, that is also the amplifier, not just the speaker. The Bose units have each amp individually mounted to the speaker it powers.

this is the best idea/solution i heard in a long time for a very common problem, props to the guy with a good idea and doesnt post.

side note: i think nissan designed the trunk not to open all the way, so that it doesnt hit anything when opened or when it rains it doesnt stay open too long.

I have a fiberglass tv and speaker in the trunk lid, so my trunk is really heavy. The bungee cord thing is not working for me.

I used a hood strut, and drilled a hole into the arm that lifts the trunk and a hole into the trunk. Then with the touch of a button it pops all the way up and stays up been like this for about a year now.

I hooked up some cords today.. good idea! Now when I'm carrying heavy crap I don't have to put it down to pull the trunk lid up a hood strut would be nicer though, I'll have to look for one the next time I'm at the junkyard..

Because I'm thinking the next step is that it won't move up from the latch, and I'll have to lift the lid as I hit the remote button or turn the trunk key. Not something I couldn't live with, but just another annoyance.
