Well, I posted a thread some time ago about making an OSCAI out of PVC pipe and plumbing materials...it was weird looking, out of place, non-functional and most of all GHETTO-TIED WITH GREEN STRINGS.

Then one day I hit a dip and *POP* went the bottom joint of my oscai. Basically it ripped out of the PCV pipe at the exact place where it was connected with a screw...left a big lop-sided hole in it.
So instead of redoing it (i still have 7' of PVC pipe left). I decided to go for the more professional approach, use ABS pipeing and Flexible couplers....oh yeah, and a scooop to make it look KOOL (and not stick out as low).

Total Cost: $19.76

Materials:
1 - 3" wide ABS Pipe (10 feet or less if you can get it)
1 - 3" -> 2" flex rubber coupler
1 - 3" -> 3" flex rubber coupler
1 - Utility Nozzle (air scoop thingie, in hardware department near vacuums)
All these parts are available in the plumbing department...except fot the air scoop, its in the hardware section.

0) Take off the left splash guard on the bottom of the car, the one that protects the transmission.

1) Take the 3"->2" coupler and put in the Utility Nozzle into the 2" hole. It should take some force because the Utility Nozzle (air scopp) is actually 2.5" around...but it fits...i swear.

2) Take the 3" wide ABS pipe, and measure from the top of it (where it has a smooth and unrigid top) then cut it to be about 16" inches total. 16" is more than you need, it will be sticking out too low on the ground, but you WILL NEED to cut it later, by yourself, depending on how low you want it to be.

3) Take the 3"->3" coupler and tighten one side ALOT. I mean ALOT, make it REALLY tight because you are going to be connecting it to the open hole on the bottom of your stock airbox scoop. Make it tight so it looks about 2.5" around, and try sticking it onto the bottom of the scoop (where you took out the L-shaped piece), if it falls off, tighten it some more. Tighten it so much that you can hang stuff off of it (your whole OSCAI will hang off of it) and so much so that air will not go out of it...cause thats where all the forced air will be coming into. Try to make sure air will not go through little holes around the tightened part. The coupler will look like its going to break, but it really wont, its rubber.

4) Take the 16" inch piece of ABS pipe and stick it on the 3"-2" coupler ( the one with the scopp in the 2" hole ) use the rigid side, not the straight and smooth side, tighten it real good. It might be REAL hard to stick it in, but I found that if you take the metal piece completely off of the coupler, it will go in easier. YOU NEED MUSCLE FOR THIS.

5) Now its all basically done...all you have to do is stick in the smooth side of the 16" pipe into the coupler thats on the air scoop already...you should have a friend pull it up from the bottom of the car, otherwise it will be kind of hard and tricky because you cant lower it from the top of the car (not enough space).

6) Now tighten the smooth part of the 16" pipe real good and that should be it..the pipe should jiggle lightly side to side, but it should be kind of stable...it fits between the fan and a bolt on the transmision. Rotate the scoop so that it faces forward (Websters New Dictionary, see: duh).

I think thats it, if you guys need more details, tell me. Sorry I have no pix, no digicam.

How much diffrence did you notice after this mod? Meaning noise, performance increase, etc.

k

I didnt notice any noise because I cant really hear it over my exhaust, but its probably more noticeable when i go WOT, but I cant do that right now, something is up with my spark plugs or something.

Performance wise, its freaking nice! i dropped in a K&N and reset my ECU and it rocks! I swear from 40->90 takes SO LITTLE TIME! I amazed myself when I looked at the speedometer of a place where I usually do 60 and I was doing 80, i didnt notice it.

oh yeah, and it looks pretty professional, like its supposed to be there...except maybe for the ribbed ABS pipe...
