I just got a used remote for my Maxima that came with reprograming instructions that were really simple. Are there programing instructions for the key as well? The dealership wants $35 to do it. They wanted the same for the remote so if there is something floating around, please let me know.

Dealer wins again

It's beyond me why the 99 key cost so much and needs to be reprogramed when bought new. I guess thats the price for extra security. It's cheaper than a whole new car.

Yeah, if you have the anti-theft option, your key has a chip in it that is programmed to your car. I just got my car and it only came with one key. I am trying to get a spare made in the event I lose my keys. If you just get a regular key made without the chip, it will not start.

PROGRAM THE KEY

I have the instructions someplace at home. I'll try to look lunch time for them. I think I found a thread on here one day on how it's done. Actually you program your cars computer to read the key, you don't program the key itself. I remember something like locking the doors or unlocking the doors 3 times while your in the car, then the emergency flashers flash 3 times, that indicates you in program mode.. bla bla bla .. I'll look for it today and try to post it for you.

Three seconds

To state it more accurately, a non-chipped key will start the engine, but it will run only three seconds and then die.

OK, that doesn't sound good. What insight can you add that I am not aware of? Like I said, the remote was really easy and I hope the key will be too.

The "chipped" key is standard equipment on '99-up Maximas.
