I had this problem on my Maxima a couple years ago. Turned out to be the rear oxygen sensor. Took it to a non-dealer repair shop in town. Came out to about $150 with parts and labor.
By the way...I think you and I have the exact same Maxima (95 GLE, Ruby, Black leather). Cool.

I thought an O2 sensor would be more than that to replace.
But yea...if the car hasn't gotten it replaced, it seems to me by observation and research that the rear O2 sensor is a pretty common issue with the G4s.

You can diagnose what is wrong by testing the ECU. The instructions are here. http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html. If you still need help, come back with the error codes.

On the 4th Generation Maxima engine the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is located in the water outlet tube close to the engine end of the upper radiator hose. There are two sensors in that area. The one nearest the hose is for the dashboard temperature gauge. The ECTS, the one you're interested in, is right next to the the gauge sending unit. There is a good picture of these sensors in the Haynes repair manual on page 3-7.
With the engine cold, disconnect the ECTS and measure its resistance.
Reconnect the ECTS, start the engine, run it until fully warmed up. Stop
the engine, and repeat the resistance measurement. The "warm" reading
should be a much lower value than the "cold" reading.
The manual gives these specs:
Engine coolant temperature 68F, ECTS resistance 2.1 - 2.9 Kohms
Engine coolant temperature 194F, ECTS resistance 0.24 - 0.26 Kohms
(Roughly a factor of ten difference.)

1.)Try to reset the ECU and see if it goes out by itself.
2.)If it comes back on then replace or check, its probably easier to change out though. The sensor is located at the beginning of the coolant outlet hose on the rear of the front cylinder bank. You can do this yourself, with a working knowledge of your car. The Nissan part number is 2263044B20 and the list price is $24.09. The dealer can do this in about 15 minutes, but you will still get chaged the hour rate, which is in the neighborhood of 70 bucks. Is it okay to drive with it on? Don't know off hand.
