Steering Wheel Vibration
#1
I own a 1998 Maxima SE and the steering wheel vibrates between 75 and 80MPh. I had six shops look at it and no one can find the problem. It's not a huge shimmy, but its annoying. I've replced the tires, rotors, pads, had an alignment done, had the tries balanced by 4 different shops and yet I still get the same shimmy. Does anybody else have this problem. The car was bought new and the problem started happening at about 10,000 miles. There is now 60,000 miles on the car. When the car was under warranty I brought it numerous times back to the dealer, but all they did was balance the tires. This never helped, but the dealership insisted that balancing was the only thing that could be wrong with it. Any ideas please post or email me. Thanks!!

I too have this problem except my shimmy starts around 60-65 and get progressively worse as I go faster. I replaced tires, 2 4-wheel balances, 1 alignment and same problem. I checked the front end for worn suspension parts and had a mechanic look at it as well and no problems found. I'm thinking it may be the front struts cause I have 80K on the originals.

I am having the same problem. My 98 Maxima with about 75,000 miles starts vibrating at about 65mph. I had 4 new tires put on, blanced and an alignment and it still vibrates. This shouldn't be. Why are so many people having the same problem?
It would be great if somebody knows a common cause.

I have no evidence to back this up, but it is my opinion that our cars are very sensitive to inproper seating. I believe that the problem is caused at the shop when impact wrenches are used to seat the wheels. I always ask for them to hand torque the lugs. When they do everything is fine..you know the feeling. Try to watch the mechanic as the wheel is seated. Sometimes they use the impact wrench to "start" the lug nuts and then finish it off with the torque wrench. I have found that this is not a good way to do this either.
Hope this helps.
