is the y-pipe worth the money? what does the butt dyno say for all of you that have it?

also, what does "for off-road use only"? will it pass emissions without the pre-cats?

I have the POP charger and stillen exhaust.

TIA!

Butt dyno? Why bother with butt dyno with a real dyno say the combo of CAI and Y-pipe makes 20hp to the wheels?

I didn't install mine myself, b/c I didn't want to fight w/ the rusty bolts under the car. I took mine to a shop, and they charged me $60. It is worth it!!

Besides a supercharger the ypipe is about ->

I installed mine myself a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't too bad, but I did run into a couple of problems. One of the nuts on the cat was rusted completely on and I ended up stripping it, so I had to cut it off. Then, my dealer gave me the wrong size gaskets, so it didn't seal right the first time. Once I figured it out though, it only took about 15 minutes to take it off again and put it on right. I guess it was kind of a pain, but I get some kind of sick satisfaction from doing stuff myself.

I was stupid and bought the Y-pipe last. Too bad the buttdyno didn't vote to buy it sooner.

Get it and some air intake at the same time!

difference

The y pipe is the pipe used to collect the exhause gasses from the two cylinder banks, it is right under the engine and leads to the cat. The b pipe is the pipe that goes from the cat to the muff. If you get a cat back system it comes with the b pipe. I have neither, but hear the y pipe is the s t, esp if you get the rt cat to go with. Lotsa peeps get the y, the rt cat and a custom b pipe for max power, but stick with the stock muff for quiet sound. From what i hear the precats on the stock y are only for when the engine is cold, so if you warm it up it passes emissions. Hope this helps

Stillen used to have lots of problems with their 1st gen Y-pipe. I hear the new 2 piece is much better - no more "bees in a can" sound.

The big difference between Stillen and Cattman is the metal. Cattman uses Stainless Steel. Stillen uses regular steel that will rust over time

Brian Catts just closed his $400 group deal a couple weeks ago on this board. 10+ buyers jumped on in only 4 days
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.phtml?threadid=2736

Maybe if enough people get together he'll do another deal.

P.S. My local shop hadn't seen the SS Y-pipe til now. They were very impressed with the fit and quality. Means alot coming from somebody who's done 6+ Max S/C installs!

I have the Cattman Jet-hot, and I can't imagine a pipe that would fit any better.

If I'm not mistaken, the Stillen pipe is not stainless steel, but rather a nickel plated mild steel. Either way, the rep I spoke to claimed it was resistant to corrosion. Not sure if anybody has had probs with the Stillen pipe rusting on them.

Question

I also got the $299 price from stillen as well. That is for the stainless one. What is the difference between the stainless and the JetHot one. I would think that since the Jet was already coated it would be the better of the two however it cost less (from catman) what gives?

Cattman s/s y-pipe

I read that the Jet-Hot y-pipe is about to be discontinued. I was going to get a Jet-Hot but it was backordered 2 or 3 weeks so I got the s/s one. I put it on myself and it fit perfect. Took about 45 minutes.

Good luck with that....
Not to be pessimistic, but got rice ordered about $3000 in parts from Stillen and they wouldn't budge on a discount.

I have cattman's ss y-pipe. Fit and finish

is excellent. Noise is a non-issue as I still have the
stock intake and exhuast.

If you header wrap the stillen ypipe it shouldn't rust at all. But i have never really heard anyone complain about it before anyways.

i wanna know what this $299 deal from stillen is all about..so for that price you get a full stainless steel y-pipe? does anyone have this pipe installed on their max? how's the fit, finish, and performance? any bees in the can noises? i'm debating about the stainless versions of cattman and stillen. $299 is a big difference from $450!

Jet Hot pipe is going away. Cattman SS replacing - much better seller.

Unless Stillen changed their pipe it's still "Chrome plated mild steel". Page 28 of their '99 catalog.

Also i wanted to know how much improvement does do have on my car? And if its that much of a improvement where can i puchase one.?
Also i live in Marietta, Ga so would any one know if this would effect emissions ?

Either Y-pipe is an excellent investment. Advertising says 15-25 hp. I haven't run dyno's or 1/4's yet to prove.

Can say it makes more of a difference than any other N/A mods I've done. RTCat, CAI, UPD for instance.

It's something you can feel when you drive!

The last time I heard, Stillen's Y was NOT SS STEEL. From a pic I saw it was just chromed mild steel. Confirm before considering ordering the Stillen unit.

SS-Ypipe

I had the bees in a can sydrome with my Stillen, and replaced it with a Cattman and it went away.Y-pipe is the best NA HP/Tq increase you can buy I think. You really can feels the difference when you push the pedal. As far as noise goes, if you have a stock muffler the noise increase is minamal. With a b-pipe or aftermarket muffler or both, the noise is drastically louder. I think it sounds good though. My .02$

Y PIPE... Worth it???

To answer and comment on a few questions in this post..

Yes, it will pass emission when the car is warm... But running a Y-Pipe is completely illegal in all states since you are removing the pre-cats... Most shops will refuse to do the work due to legal liabilities...

This does make a big difference in overall smog output...
If you only had the primary cat-converter without the Y-pipes, you would probably have to drive your car for several hours after warm up to equal the smog output of your car in the first few minutes of warm-up...

I don't know how often any of you drive for hours each day... For the average driver, the total smog output will dramatically increase... I don't have exact numbers, but when you consider that the emissions components remove an extreme majority of pollutants, you can start to imagine what removing the pre-cats can do to smog output...

I would like someday to experiment with an aftermarket Y-pipe but cut-out sections to integrate the OEM pre-cats...
The pre-cat removal isn't the sole reason for HP gains... the 2-to-1 output collector and all the rest of the piping bends are less restrictive than OEM as well... Maybe would be worth a gain of 5-7HP... I think the aftermarket Y-pipes are good for about 15HP without pre-cats..

My car is definetly louder because when i start it i can hear the muffler because of the increased flow. Also the front of the car makes more noise because the old ypipe was covered head to foot with heat shields and crap, so the new one lets off more noise. Not to mention how it slips up the speedometer now. Its crazy. I don't even have to push my foot down that hard and it takes off. But thats with a CAI as well.
