Is that an auto? I think that'd be an OK time for an auto. I'm not real big on racing, but one of these days I'd like to get out to the track to see what my 5-speed SE could run stock.

Nice head unit, that's what's going in my maxi

Theres room for improvement, those 18" wheels arent helping you much ..... what time of day where you running? What was your reaction time? Im in FL too and there are Many factors that can contribute to a so-so run, giving your engine time to cool is critical, especially with the recent heat/humidity weve been having, remember A/C and all acessories OFF and go on yellow.....

It all comes down to tracks and conditions. My best was a 16.3@85, in mid 80s weather at an elevation of about 450 ft and COMPLETELY stock engine wise (well except for colder plugs). Your time is ok, but needs work. I have a feeling that MegaMax got his number on a rather cool day.

The rims do weigh you down some or you could try putting on the stock 15" with some performace tires. Also try turning the heater on right before taking off.

Well, there are a few factors.

1-This was your first time running. You only get faster as you get use to teh track.
2-Did you launch the car. Meaning power brake it?
3-Did you leave it in "D" or shift it manually?
4-The heat that has been along teh east coast doesnt help. It was 103 here today in NJ.
5-Elevation, what is the elevation there? That is a very good reason as well. Larry, madmax2k (i think) is in FL and he has great times. 14.38 on his 2k 5spd w/ CAI & Y-pipe. So im really thinking that isnt a problem then.
6-Drop those 18" and that will help. Usually the smaller the rims the better acceleration you have but drop in top end speed. With bigger rims your acceleration is terrible but you will have a higher trap speed. (Well at least that is what usually happens for my friends)

BTW-I ran a 15.5@88mph in March w/ only a CAI & chrome rims.

Thanks man...

yes I left the car in D.. someone told me to put OverDrive OFF...

next time I will try different methods.

Can you successfully powerbrake in a fwd?

I tried in my parents 94 Accord EX once a while back. Heh...it didn't do anything (I didn't try again). Also tried recently in my friends auto 92 legend coupe. No buck forward or anything.

I dunno, both cars above seem to start off a little better when manually shifted from the start (1 to 2 to D3, then to the final drive gear). Of course, you have to shift a second before you actually want to shift...

Yes you can power brake a auto. They dont do much really. When i mean power braking it at the start up. When you are staged, i usually ude my left foot to hold down the brake and my right and rev the car up to about 1500k rpms. As soon as i see the last yellow to go off.. well little bit before it i let go of the brake and gas it. THe diff for me between launching and not launching has mattered up to about .2 diff in my times.

Well there has been a big talk about this. This is my opinion and what i have learned from dragging a lot. I use to shift it manually but like you said it takes about a sec. The lag inbetween there costs you time. Now if you realize when you leave it in "D", it doesnt take as much time to shift thus meaning it shifts quicker. You basically answered it right there. Leaving it in "D" shaved up to a .15 diff in my times. I now have a modified VB (done by Don in Texas) this makes shifts even quicker.

I really dont think the car seems to be any faster on teh start between manually shifting or leaving it in "D". It is just as fast either way for me. You're still starting out in 1st gear. Shifting it manually only makes you think faster b/c its liek driving a 5 speed and you have more control.

Feel free to ask anymore questions about dragging or launching. There plenty of people here who drag race their car. Im sure they have their own pointers as well. Good luck.

just wondering but.....what does turning the heater on before you takeoff do?

I'm going to the track on Sept 9th to see what I'll run, and I was curious if anyone has any tips.

Thanks

Take EVERYTHING and I mean everything out of your trunk and the inside of your car. Yeah..take that spare out too! It's heavy! CD's, etc.. remove them. Subs, yeah..remove 'em!

Do NOT fill your tank with gas! A full gas tank is a ton of weight! Bring a gas can with you.

Dunno if this will help but have 93+ octane in the gas can.

At Maxus I saw some guys take out the back seat.. hey.. less weight..

Also saw this at maxus.. if you have some drive up stands and bring your tools, you can remove exhaust parts from your car. Reduces weight and gives you less restrictive flow.. yeah.. will sound nice and loud..whooohoo!

While you're under there.. do you have a Stillen or Addco RSB? Those things weigh a TON! Remove that too.

Get some drag slicks for the front.

Reduce the pressure in your front tires for more grip/larger contact patch.

I dunno about the autos but I was spinning tires every launch. I'm not experienced and I was reving up to 3000rpm and then popping the clutch and flooring it.. can you say spin? I knew you could... Can you say wheel hop..sure you can...

Also, if you see the green light, you were too late taking off. hehehe

My best time was a result of taking each gear up to around 6300rpm and power shifting. Unless you're supercharged or using NOS, you shouldn't have to go past third gear in a 1/4 mile. I didn't... hehehe

That's about all I picked up at Maxus on dragging.

No, you can leave it on or off. OD just eliminates any chance of the car going into 4th gear.

As far as the person who asked about the heater. I usually do that. While waiting right before i stage, i usually turn on teh heat and leave the windows down. The point of doing this is to draw all the heat away from the engine. Does this really do much for your time? I have no idea. I usually just leave it on when i go down the track. Im sure it would be better if you shut it off so your acc. arent on.

You can alos uyse slicks to imprive your time but i just use my old steel rims and drag on those. They work fine for me..till i can afford drag radials. If you decide to run on the stock rims/tires (either 15" steel or 16" allow or 15" alloy) i would drop tire pressure down to about 22-23psi.
