Hello all. A brief introduction... I'm a former Contour owner switched Maxima driver. I just purchased a Rosewood '98 SE 5-speed from my uncle who has knee trouble and now drives an '01 GLE. I'm looking forward to maintaining and modifying my Maxima using some of the information I gather here.

My problem: the trunk lock is malfunctioning. The key doesn't operate the trunk lock; the only way to open the trunk is with the fob. What is really bad news is that we discovered this problem AFTER the uncle showed me how the Cancel Lever works. So now my trunk is permanantly locked and I'm way too big to fit through the pass-through.

My question: even if I could somehow reach the cancel lever, can I pop it up while the trunk is still closed? And if not, what might the cost of a new lock be?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards, TOM

Drop the rear seat armrest and open the trunk pass-through door. Use a really long flat-blade screwdriver to manipulate the truck latch mechanism. I know this technique works because I tested it on my own Maxima. It unlocked the trunk lid on the first try.

Thanks for the fix.

Do you know if the dealer can replace the broken lock cylinder with one that operates using my current key? Or will I have to carry two keys, one specifically for the trunk?

Thanks,
Tom

Certainly this can be done for a house door lock, but I don't know if it can be done for a car trunk lock. You may be jumping the gun here... perhaps you don't need a replacment lock cylinder... perhaps you have an easily remedied problem with the linkage or the Cancel Lever.

Oh boy!

I have had nightmares about this! LOL. As I have shaved my rear keyhole, I often fear that my trunk switch will be moved to the wrong position. Although I have not done it, I was going to recommend pretty much what Daniel said. I would take a strong stick or long screwdriver like Daniel said, tape a small flashlight somewhere in the middle of it and go in through the armrest fold down. I believe you want it in the up position. Good luck. As for getting it fixed/keyed to match your car, do you really have to? I live perfectly fine with the remote control and the inside trunk release. Good luck! Let us know if the stick works.

If either remedy doesn't do the trick what you need to do is go find a midget, a small child would work as well I guess, and bribe them to go in there for you. j/k

Me Too

My Key also doesn't open the Trunk. I have my Key Chain and the Button on the Driver Door. BUT I fear is that both depend on the Battery. If the Battery ever dies i can't get in there...

Did I mention I have relocated the Battery to the Trunk?
