Tranny Problem
Tranny Problem..looking for more details..
Just got a call from my shop and they have the tranny down and they found out it's leaking gear oil, so now it has to go to a transmission shop to get that fixed, apparently there are some seals on the inside or something like that..maybe DBM can explain it better for the manual tranny on a 96 5 spd.
So I am out another day...oh well...gotta get fixed

It was leaking gear oil, and I was told that all the seals are inside, the tranny is already out of the car.
Just curious what seals are leaking or if it's the bearings...

- input shaft
- shifter control rod
- driver side axle
- passenger side axle
The input shaft oil seal is the only one which requires disassembly of the transmission. Since your clutch job mechanic wants this seal replacement to be done by a transmission shop, it is probably the input shaft seal which is leaking.
This calls for a careful inspection of the bearings. Transmission oil seals rarely leak, and when they do it is often because the bearing has excessive free play allowing the shaft to move around and wear the seal. The oil leak is like the canary in the coal mine; it is warning you about a bigger problem. Don't ignore this warning.
Re: Re: Tranny Problem..looking for more details..
Hopefully not too serious of a repair, the funny thing is the tranny shop told my mechanic that the 96 was the only one that made all the seals internal? Is this correct?

You may or may not know this, but do you think they would replace the bearing as well, he indicated it would be $500-600 repair?

Click on Transmission (in the left window).
Scroll the left window down.
Click on Disassembly (in the left window).
Scroll down to the photo legend which reads "Left: Remove the input shaft, main shaft, and 1-2 shift fork as one unit."
Look at the photo on the left. There is a black ring at about 9 o'clock in the photo. That is the input shaft oil seal.
This site is one of the best I've come across. You may enjoy browsing it.

Daniel, this is one of the best down to earth trans rebuild sites I've seen. I did my Honda once and can totally relate.
