Pathfinder AC Compressor Repair Question

I'm looking at a used 1990 Pathfinder SE V6 for a second vehicle for the beach, scuba, etc. The owner says the AC doesn't work because the AC Compressor is shot. He says it can be rebuilt and made operational again for about
$ 500. Which is what his brother supposedly did on his 1989 Pathfinder. Can the AC compressor actually be rebuilt or is this guy blowing smoke up my rear end?

Get an A/C specialist to look at it. Might just have a leak in the condenser from a rock or something. Bring it to a good radiator shop that does A/C's and ask them for an estamate to get the thing running again. Thats probably your best bet. A good radiator shop will repair a leaky condenser, dealer might want to put a new one in. $$$$$ Compressors don't give up that easily, usually it's something else in the system that goes.
