AUTO Tranny 1st gear problem, please help>>

Hello.
I was driving today and wanted to shift my gear to 1st so it can start manually. But when I put it in 1st gear, the car automatically shifted to second. I realized that my shifter or tranny did not allow me to stay in 1st gear like it used to. I have about 120K miles in my auto. The car runs great and shifts well when I leave it in "D". Is this a sign of a bad tranny? No matter how much I keep on putting my shifter to 1st while at a full stop, it is like leaving the gear in 2nd.
Please help!
Thank you

Well, were you moving, or at a stop light ? You didn't start the car in first, did you ?
I just started manually shifting, and it's been alright for me. When I approach a stop light or stop of some sort, I downshift from D into 1st. (When I'm stopped or almost stopped) I then accelerate, then shift into 2nd, then drive. Both 1st and 2nd gear Definatally have more power than Drive.
I was told manually shifting at all is bad b/c our 1st and 2nd gears arent made to shift at mid-high rpm's. But I was also told by a enthusiast that it's fine. So if anyone can clear this up, that'd be great.
Edit your question and make it more specific, then maybe someone can help you out.
