Hi... I have a base 1998 MAXIMA SE and I live in New York. Just being curious. Is it possible to put ABS? If it is, how much does it cost?

Thanks in advance.

Short answer: No
Longer answer: with enough money, anything is possible.

This conversion would require installation of tone rings on each wheel, sensors at each wheel, an ABS Control Unit in the passenger compartment, an ABS Actuator in the engine compartment, a Dual proportioning valve, and all of the harnesses and relays needed to connect these components.

This conversion is possible but costly. The cost depends on
- who does the work (dealer, independent shop, or you)
- whether you use new or used parts

I recommend against doing this.

Just for laughs, call your local friendly Nissan dealer and ask for a price on the ABS Actuator. Just that one part. Make sure you are sitting down when you hear the answer.

I called the dealer. The cost is $1,152.15 for the ABS Actuator alone. I guess it is not worth it. Thanks again.

MedicSonic provided the price of the Control Module, the "brain" of the ABS system. You provided the price of the Actuator, the "muscle" of the ABS system. The price of those two important components adds up to more than $2,600. I'd hate to think of the labor bill for this conversion.

5Gen Maximas have ABS as standard equipment. New (2002) Maximas have a 3.5 liter engine. How's your bank account balance?

Well I know all 5th Gen Maximas come with ABS as a standard eqiupmnet. However, I prefer the 4th Gen body style. As I mentioned before and based on your given information, I don't think it's worth it. I guess I just have to wait what the 6th Gen Maxima body style going to be.
