I would like to do something different to my grill/bumper on my 97 Max. I know a few of you have gutter mesh in the lower part of your bumper, could i get a pic of this. Also, I was wondering if you could give me directions on how to do this.

I have a '95 but maybe it can give you an idea of what it looks like at least.

Metal Gutter Mesh - Home depot. $10 for like 7 sheets. Plenty for screw-ups.

mesh grill install

Sorry i don't have pictures of mine, but when i did my grill inserts I used l brackets to hold the mesh in place and hold it to the inside of the bumper. This requires taking the bumper off, andd taking the front grill out if you want to do the front grill as well. The easiest way to do it is to use a thin screwdriver and screw the screws in on an angle through the holes in the mesh.. Hope this helps.

I have a 95 stock $E front end with the gutter cover inserts. It looks very nice. Unfortunately I will have to put my front license plate back - taking away from the aesthetics. To do this I did what everybody knows: I bought the Home Depot gutter covers, but then I fabricated a template with cardboard for the upper most grille (the one w/ logo)I then traced this pattern onto one of the gutter covers and cut it out a little smaller. I removed the hamburger and placed the cutout gutter cover over the factory grille. I couldn't find metal plyable enough, so I stripped the paper off trash bag twist ties and used these to secure the gutter cover to the spines of the factory grille. The lower cutouts in the bumper are a lot more of a 8itch. I removed the license plate, and took measurements for the smaller openings that are in line w/ blinkers. There isn't much access for these openings from behind due to the frontal section of the bumper. (you'll see what I mean) I cut the pieces slightly larger than needed and worked them into the openings from behind. I then drilled very small holes into the back most part of the spines in the openings and again used twist ties to attach. The bottom opening seems like it would be the easiest but it requires a little work too. There is ample clearance to get under the car on the ground and look up to the back side of the bumper. My lowest opening has smines in it, but from behind the bumper you can see 4 tabs the stick out on the top of this thing, I cut those off with a utility knife and just cut a piece of gutter cover to lay accross the backs of the spines. Again I drilled small holes, this time though, I drilled two holes per spine. ONe at the top, and one at the bottom. I also put a hole in the very far ends of the opening, at the rounded portions. Again used twist ties.
I don't have a camera but it looks very nice and it was very cheap to do. To sum it up: there are 4 inserts on my 95 - 1 where the hamburger logo is, 2 on each side of my license mount, and 1 (the biggest) on the very bottom of the bumper. The one with the logo is top mounted, (I painted and re attached my logo over top of the gutter cover - if you don't there is a visible background of the missing hamburger) The other 3 inserts are recessed and mounted to the backs of the spines that are in the openings. Damn, this was long but I hope someone will benefit from it.
I think it is important to use as many twist ties as possible because the mesh is very plyable and hitting a bug at my fav. cruising speed would definitely bend the mesh back some. Don't want that to happen!!!! The stripped twist ties also are 'invisible' I DON'T KNOW IF THEY'LL RUST!!! GOOD LUCK

wow, yall all work too hard, mine was incredibly easy, the mesh from home depot had clips on it, i undid the 6 front screws holding the black plastic to bottom of the bumper, i bent the tops of the mesh so that it would push against the top part of the bumper, and then pulled the black plastic back and slid it under, then attached the clips to the bottom of the bumper and it was done, then i cut the mesh into two pieces and did the same for the outside two, took 30 minutes max, no patterns, little cutting, no taking the bumper off and no worrying about scratching the paint

In front of the bumper...

Ok, I did a search and this topic came up. I just got the gutter mesh covers from a local Lowe's and was wondering, do all of you with the 97-99 Maximas put the mesh behind the bumper in the valence? I kind of want to put mine in front of it as well as put one insert in the upper hole (license plate section) in front of the bumper, has anyone have any advice or has done this already? I'm thinking it will look a little cleaner, though more effort is put into cutting it. If I find that it's too hard to do, I guess I'll just put them all behind the bumper.
