Hey guys, I'm knocking on 70K, and I've put off replacing the fuel filter....and maybe I feel it in acceleration(?), but anyhow, thought I'd ask you guys how to replace it. Where is it anyway? I've only replaced fuel filters on the old musclecars, and jap cars are kind of a new thing to me.
Anyone give me a decent description of how to do it, and how much the filter is? Thanks in advance....sorry for my ignorance...

Locate the master brake cylinder, on the driver's side of the car against the firewall. The fuel filter is to the bottom left of this. The fuel filter itself is held in by two arms the hold it. Just pop the fuel filter right out of this. Then, unscrew the two fasteners for the fuel lines, which can be quite difficult, but take your time. Good luck. Try to get a Haynes manual, it tells you exactly how to.

If you have the manuals then there is a great right up in them. I think also on the site there is a how to. I think it is a sticky. The price was about 15 bucks from Walmart when I looked once.

Just a piece of advice.

Be careful when replacing it to not bump the MAFS or any vacuum hoses. I just recently replaced mine and may have bumped my MAFS and am having a problem with the car idling and running rich.

i used the above write ups in conjunction with the Haynes manual to replace my fuel filter last weekend (i was waaay overdue). in any case, my advice is to use pliers to remove the hoses (delicately of course). I tried using my hands to remove the hoses from the fuel filter and it wouldn't come off until I used pliers. also, not mentioned in the instructions, remove a three of the plugs (don't know the specific names) near the fuel filter to give your hands more room to get at the filter. these plugs are color coded on my 96 se one is purple, one orange and one black.

since this was my first time trying this on my own it took me an hour and a half (including a test drive to check for leaks), but i was extra careful and made sure i did everything correctly. good luck.

Make sure and use the 300zx filter as it is much bigger and will last longer.

Taking fuel filter off

Today I tried taking off the fuel filter real quick to replace it. I could not get my hand down in there easy enough with a screwdriver to undo it. I sprayed some WD-40 but then I had to go to work. Anyone have tips gor getting the screws undone easier so I can get off the hose and replace the filter?

Thanks

SuDZ

Use a very long screw driver and come in from the front. I borrowed the screw driver from my local mechanic and it was easier. The filter is still very difficult to remove from the fuel lines and I have some good scabs on my hands from that effort. Good luck

yeah, the fuel filter is NO joke to get apart from the hoses.. i must have spent about 20mins too long just torquing on it... it's easy to get frustrated with it, especially with the tight constraints on space, just take your time and work it off slowly from the hoses... my $.02... good luck!

Finally

I finally got around to installign it today and what a difference. I changed mine at around 58.7K and it feels much better. Well worth the trouble of trying to get in there. I think Tranny Fluid and Spark Plugs are on the list for this weekend.

Sudz... if you do end up doing the Tranny Fluid... make sure to get some Redline... you'll really feel a difference with that one... it's starting to get cold outside here and the gears still slide like
'butta'! well worth it IMHO...

Yeah I got it in my Garage now. It is just a matter of dropping it in. Was a way too busy weekend to get it done this time. So it is really that noticeable huh? Excellent.

Compared to the stock fluid (at least I would assume it was the stock fluid as i bought my car w/28,000mi)... changing the fluid at 60,000 was incredible... my experience was the ease of shifting ANYTIME... but especially now that it has started to get colder... 1st gear was always a little tough... but not anymore!! definitely worth it... and i'm sure many others feel the same way...
