1998 BMW 540 6-speed HUMILIATED!
Check this out. While surfing the internet, I came across this posting from a BMW 540i w/ 6-speed owner (bimmer.org)
: Guys,
: I've been humiliated by a late model Nissan Maxima (modified) tonight. We did several 2nd to 3rd gear punches. We were pretty
even in 2nd but as soon as I shifted into 3rd, the Maxima gained at least a car length. For some reason, my car had a very soft 2nd
to 3rd gear shift. It seemed that the clutch refused to grip the power right away. I even turned the AC and ASC off. No difference. He
braked immediately after that. We did these 3 times. Results were the same.
: What's going wrong? Is my clutch worn out after 8k miles? Am I not shifting correctly? I shifted at 6.2k rpm.
: The worst part was when I asked the guy what he did to his Maxima... he told me only thing he has in it is super unlead fuel.
: I'm embrassed. Would this have anything to do with my newly installed BL/SS? (I'm just trying to give myself an excuse)
: Embrassed and Disappointed,
: Kenneth
: '98 540s6 (apparently not as quick as I thought it is)

yeah
Im with Nickstam on that one ,,, it was probably that whoever was in the max was just a better driver , but maybe the maxima just has a better clutch and tranny than the bimmer,,, also , the max was more than likely a five speed, since the 6 speeds arent out yet, so maybe it is the fact taht the Bimmer has closer gears, which might result in a little less jump when shifting from 2-3... good driving to whoever had the max. beating a bimmer 5 class is not easy by any means....
I smoked a GS400 the other night. Coincidentally I have never felt my car this fast. I've always used a synthetic blend, but this time the NIssan dealer only had full synthetic . . . is it possible this would actually make the car faster? I can't possibly think so . . . but my car fuggin JUMPED off the line. I don't wanna pat myself on the back too much, but I am a good driver . . . still the car jumps like I haven't felt in a long time. I can't wait to get the false floor out of my trunk and get my amps mounted in a lightweight rack. This GS was rimmed the hell up too, looked awesome. The guy was trying to play with me but definitely couldn't hang. Such a good feeling . . . his car was WAY more expensive

i lose more than I win. maybe because im always out chasing the big dogs like the z28's, mustangs, and more recently a8's. damn i'll beat one of those a8's some day. the only high profile car I have beaten is a 944 turbo. dont know if thats good or not. anyway, its no fun beating integras and civics all the time. well actually, i love kickin the **** outta jettas...
Well, the 540 has 322FT.LB torque. Assuming 70% gets to the wheels, that is about 230 to the wheels. Maxima 5th gen has 170 FT.LB. to the front wheels assuming 20% torque loss through the driveline.
When that 540i driver is shifting at near redline, he is putting his 3rd gear to start at around 4000RPM which is where his torque band starts to trail off... in fact it nosedives after 5000RPM... Eventually, by 6000RPMs, both cars are probably putting the same torque to the wheels because a 5th gen Maxima engine holds on strong at high RPMs.
And then understand that a 540 weighs about 3900LBs and a Maxima is 3100 pounds.
Once you take all these factors in consideration, it is easy to see how the field becomes more level... And if 3rd gear in a Maxima is shorter than 3rd gear in a BMW 540, more acceleration can be had.
Its not magic... it's just physics..

Here's a link to a dyno plot of the 2000 M5 and 2000 540i 6-speed. Torque looks to peak at 268ft-lb at 4000rpms. Its above 230ft lb (at the wheels ) through the entire run, from 1800 to about 5800... so I think the idea of torque trailing off for the 540 is off base... take a look for yourself.

6spd 540s do 0-60 in 5.5-5.8 and do flat 14 1/4s...
the Maxima musta been fast OR the BMW driver sucked OR both!!!
the autos we stand more of a chance... MT just tested on at 6.58 0-60 VERY SLOW!!!!! they tested a Wagon 540iA earlier and got a 5.9 o-60 and 14.4 1/4th

That guy either can't drive, or the maxima was modded well. I've driven an auto 540, it's a beast and I've driven 2k Maxes as well and they cannot compare.. 540 is a monster and it would eat a 5th gen.

.....doesn't a stock 540i Sport 6-speed run a 14.0?
