drive axle removal??
drive axle removal??
I am currently working on replacing my left drive axle. My car is an auto so in order to remove the left axle I must tap it out from the right side of the transaxle. Well, when I was removing the right side drive axle I ran into a problem with the Bearing support bracket and the bearing retainer. I am having difficulty seperating these two parts, due to corrosion. Has anyone done this before and may possibly offer some suggetion as to how to seperate these parts. If it helps I am using a haynes manual for reference. Thanks for any advice. TED
just yank it
well...I replaced both left and right outer cv boot yesterday. I would have to say that it was the hardest damn thing to do. For the right side...there is a bracket. Get under the car and remove the 3 screws holding 2 piece bracket together. Now get out from under the car and hold the axle from where the wheel well is. Just yank and it'll come right out.
don't put it too hard
I placed my right hand on the end of the axle and my left hand just behind the outer boot. Then just give it a strong short yank...cuz you don't want the boot to run into any strut housing and tear it. So just give it a strong sort yank and it should do the job.
I recently replaced the passengers side drive axle on my 1999 maxima. I found that the traveller bearing assembly on the axle had seized onto the support bracket so badly no amount of pulling would release it. After difficultly spraying the area with penetrating oil, I had to take a chizzle and hammer where the bearing and support bracket meet and separate it by wedging the chizzle between them. After about 20 min I finally got it. Hope this helps someone.

I hope you put some antiseize on there before you put it back together.
Holy smokes! Thank you, Google.
At any rate the chisel advice helped. I was struggling with the carrier bearing in my 01 and thought was missing something for sure. After reading this I just waded in with a hammer and chisel and walloped the thing apart. 10 mins and voila. 175k, probably the last time that thing'll be apart.
