Folks I don't have the slightest clue about maxima modifications and parts in general. Where do i learn???

haha ok, well first of all how bout the basics? How does an intake and high flow exhaust actually create a gain in HP? Also assuming i had $600 to spend on mods. What is the best way to use it? No cosmetics, just HP gain
