Why wont my half shafts come out? danny B ?

yeah so my car is all apart, i went and bought air tools to make my life easier for a while, ive gotten to the point in my transmission removal that its time to pull the halfshafts and they wont budge! am i doing something wrong? , i got the axle stub out of the hub and now the CVs are resting on the front a-arms, do i need to pry the CVs out? do i have to take off both ? , in the chiltons it doesnt say to remove the exhaust(ypipe) should i do so to make my life easier ( with my luck the bolts will break again) im getting frustrated so im going to go to bed and start fresh in the morning , any info is appreciated, thanks in advance

Please look at your Chilton repair manual, page 7-4. Did you carry out steps 6 and 7? If so, you should be able to separate the inner CV joint by using a pry-bar or tire iron.

The Haynes repair manual has better coverage of this service procedure. Please refer to Haynes (page 8-8) for a photo of the pry bar placement.

Your post did not indicate whether your transmission is 5-speed or automatic. Haynes has this note: When removing the left (driver's) side driveaxle on models with an automatic transaxle, it may not be possible to pry the inner CV joint out of the transaxle. In this case, it will be necessary to remove the right side driveaxle and insert a screwdriver through the differential side gears and knock the left side shaft free.

Some technicians save time by leaving the passenger side axle in place. This saves time (and increases profit) but makes installing the tranny more difficult. I do not recommend this stunt for the home mechanic.

The best test is to open the used tranny and inspect the internal parts.

Without opening the tranny the most you can do is shift it into 1st gear, turn the input shaft, make sure the output shaft turns, and listen/feel for anything unusual. Repeat this process for each of the other gears. Please understand that this low rpm, no-load test will reveal only major deficiencies.

How did you overcome the difficulty reported in the first post in this thread?

i was able to wedge a 4 foot crow bar between the center motor support and the cv's out put and i wacked it with a hammer and it came loose then i muscled it out by hand.
i know this isnt the best way to go about things but i didnt want to get frustrated and start making mistakes, so i took the easiest route

I am mid engine swap and im having a similar problem. I went through the chiltons it doesnt help me, basically i took most the passenger side axle off... it was so broken it just fell apart at the bearings, so now all im left with is the inner bearing and the support bearing and from that it goes to tranny, however i need to know is it a better idea to just leave it until i get the motor and tranny out and pop it off outside the car? or somehow try to get a bar in there and pry, and also where do i pry at, theres a gold colored ring on the shaft next to tranny is that it or do i pry between the support bearing and the inner boot of the driveaxle?

Not to mention an 8 year old thread.

If a thread is this old, don't bump it, just use the newbie thread...that's what it's there for.
